Crankshaft position sensor

Hello all,

I am currently awaiting my Bentley manual but cannot wait any longer. Can anyone tell me or show in pics where the CRANKshaft (not camshaft) position sensor is? I have searched and searched and all I found was on the bell housing. I have looked on the bell housing and cannot find it.
Also some say passenger side some say drivers side and some say on the front of the motor.?

Kinda hard to help unless you tell us which engine; there are 5 to choose from.

Ditto...it's amazing how many X5 owners leave off the suffix (3.0/3.0d/4.4/4.6is/4.8is)...then feel a little hurt when there's little or no response to their post.

BTW, if you throw in the M57 (diesel) engines...there are actually seven different engines for the e53:

Help us help you better...provide the suffix to the model as well as the model year & build date

All with the same location of the sensor minus the Diesel.

Sorry...but they are not all in the same location. Some are on the engine block (I6 & Diesel) and some are back on the transmission (V8s).

And again, the reason why no one from the forum responded is because they didn't know how to "tell you or show you with pics" due to lack of engine info.

I hope you realize that no one was trying to slight you in anyway.

You could really help us to help you better if you created a signature that included your model/model year/build date information. That way if someone needed to look up diagrams or data in the BMW TIS etc...they would have something to go off of. And it also helps others in the future if they are using the search feature...they will know immediately if their issue & possible resolution matches yours...especially if placement within the production range is similar.

CPS on the N62 4.4 & 4.8 (#8 in diagram)

CPS on the M62TU 4.4 & 4.6 (#12 in diagram)

CPS on the M54 (#8 in diagram)

CPS on the M57 (#14 in diagram)

CPS on the M57N (#8 in diagram)
