Nice!

I bought my X1 not giving a whole lot of thought about safety ratings. But it is nice to know its one of the safer compact SUV's out there.

Thumbs up

Very cool! While BMWs are generally considered very safe vehicles, I don't think it is often that they are actually at the top #1 spot. So it is great to see the X1 up there!! Nice work BMW!

That long hood to fit the I-6 also helps

Something about this list doesn't make sense, the BMW X1 received Good in three categories in Marginal in one (assuming small overlap front). But if you go down the list there are cars that do much better but are lower in the sequence. For example the Outlander is also Good in three categories and Acceptable in the last earning it Top Safety Pick+ designation which the BMW wouldn't have qualified for. The Forester earned a Good in all categories, and it's the only car to do so but yet it's number 8?

It's also based on "evaluations of seat and head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts". There could be other evaluation factors not mentioned in this brief synopsis article such as breaking distance, side airbags, antilock breaks, traction control, etc.
