Another "what's wrong with my X5? my MPG is abysmal!" thread

I just picked up the X5 a couple weeks ago. Drove it home from NJ on the turnpike. Trip computer showed that I was getting damn near 23 MPG over the long haul. Put about 220 miles on the car that way and drove it another 130-ish around town (probably still 50% highway) for about 350 miles total. At the end, the computer was saying I was right at 19.9 MPG. Displacement method said closer to 17.4. I thought, this can't be right, I must not have topped it off fully.

Fill up the tank, and I start driving normally (babying it, actually) to work and back (only a handful of lights and mostly rural type driving). I've been using the connected drive BMW App to check fuel level and ODO. Yesterday's reading was 17.4 gallons left, 45657 on the ODO. Today's reading at the end of the day was 15.6 gallons left, 45686 ODO.

1.8 gallons consumed
29 miles driven
=
16.1 MPG

Trip computer has showed between 18.5 and 18.8 the entire time.

So, with all that said... WTF

I"m not even CLOSE to city driving here - more like 75% highway (actually more efficient than highway since it's mostly 40-60mph speeds), and I'm getting 16 MPG!?!

Should I take this thing to my dealer or just sell it? This is unacceptable. I was willing to live with 18 combined cycle, but 16 is stupid low for a car like this. It's not even a real performance car. I figured I could get those kind of numbers out of a xDrive50i!

Bel Air MD - me too. Actually, Abingdon down near Wegmans

New owner too and I just put my third tankful in. I calculated 12.7mpg. That's with my wife driving it most of the time to and from Forest Hill and me taking it for a bit of spirited driving up to Harford Tech and back.

And to think I almost bought an X5M.

Having said that, a recent trip to OC netted me 18.5 and that was coming back doing 80-90 all the way.

Small world. I go right through that area in my way to work on post (laurel bush to Abington rd to rt 40). Recently moved from forest hill yo bel air right off Patterson mill (Parsons Ridge).

I'd love to check out that sweet x50i of yours sometime. I'm curious, is your trip computer showing the same figures you're actually getting? Mine is off (optimistically, of course) by at least 2.5 mpg.

After a search it seems like a lot of people are just dealing with this kind of economy. Why was there never a class action lawsuit on this? I've yet to see anyone who'd gotten within 3mpg of the advertised figures.

I'm ecstatic if I get to 14 average on the computer in mixed driving with my 50i. Last weekend's freeway trip bumped the overall average to 16.5.

This morning it was hovering at 10.5 due to the coding resetting the average mileage.

Turbos are thirsty.

Yup, my trip comp showed 13.4 although I topped it up after the click which thinking about it, probably dropped it down to a real 12.7.

Do you ever do Cars and Coffee in Hunt Valley? A BMW acquaintance of mine started that. Every Sat. morning.

Anyway, a real small world. My buddy Dave lives down the end of Glenmore and has a 335i and a 335is

We should all meet at the Sonic

Yep, Dave was my neighbor for many years, and I moved back into the neighborhood just 6 months ago.

Never made it to cars and coffee, sadly. With young kids, early Saturday mornings are tough for me to swing.

A sonic meet would be great sometime.

I installed Dave's tune in his older N54 335i. Speaking of which, have you considered putting a N55 JB4 in your X5. It may improve you MPGs when you baby it and make it really fun to drive when you want to get into it.

Good for 50-60 extra whp.

Yep. I've already got the jb3 on its way. . I asked terry if he has any plans on releasing a full jb4 for the x5 and he said there's nothing on the horizon. I was really surprised how few tunes are available for this model.

I was wondering if that was the case, I thought you might have just missed putting a "." in the odometer readings lol

Well, you're screwed

Can you do a reset on the computer so that it "unlearns" the former owner's driving style?

Here's a thread on how to do it:

Yes, it has something to do with the N55 X5's DME apparently.

Terry is working on a Stage 2 right now for the N63. The stage 1 goes in next weekend.

It's going to be bonkers!! SIngle digit MPGs

Please report back on the N55 Stage 1. I have a buddy with a 35i and he doesn't do forums.

I'm looking forward to your experience with the stage 1. I'm very tempted to order one.

Hmm, dang. I do recall reading about the tranny reset trick from my 335i tip days. I'll try that tomorrow morning, bit I don't have high hopes that it'll help my mileage, considering how tame the shifts already are. Worth a shot though.

Definitely going to contact the dealer about this one. This is truly crazy IMO.

do you guys reset the mpg at 2 places/screens or just on one page/screen? (I do 2 places and it looks correct to 0.1 mpg by calculator.)

also a trick with these turbos... when not in a hurry and no one hot on your tail.... midway thru accelerating, lift/release the gas pedal and the turbo/boost will kind of stop (less whine/sound), mpg meter will move to the left/higher mpg side, and then gently tap the gas pedal to continue to accelerate (without the mpg meter pegged to the right).

Boy, this seems confusing...you're going to sell the car over 2 mpg...then buy a tune,,,the contact the dealer..... "truly crazy"?? over a few mpg?

Why is this confusing? It's all relative. A few MPG is the difference between a 50i and a 35i. If I knew I was buying (what I thought was) 50i fuel economy for this kind of power, I probably would have gone for a different vehicle. 2-3 MPG is a big deal in the long run, especially when that kind of difference could mean another 50-100 hp on a different vehicle. The economy was pretty much the only reason I didn't go for the 50i. Granted, the 50i might actually be even worse, but what's ****ty here is that the EPA figures are just WAY off.

Quite frankly, the tune was ordered when I thought my trip computer was correct. On my commute this morning it continued to go up - now it's showing an average of 18.9 for the tank. My BMW Connected apps is showing an 16.4 MPG tank average at this point. Big difference.

The tune may may hurt my mileage overall, but I've had many tunes before and for the most part they don't do anything to it for normal driving. Sometimes they even improve it by making more power for the same fuel by mapping more aggressive timing or leaning out fuel.

What's "truly crazy" about this is that I'm _just barely_ getting the EPA rated CITY mileage while driving this thing 70-80% highway. The 23 MPG highway rating might as well be the moon for how close I'm getting to that... This thing drives like a dog without putting it in sport mode (keeps it under 1.5k rpm whenever possible) and STILL gets crappy mileage. I'm eager to see if the tune helps, but so far I'm not impressed.

Just to give you my stats..

2013 X5 35i with 12,000 miles on the odo.
I am getting 16.9 on the computer and my driving habit is aggressive about 70% of the time.
I drive mostly city with about 90% of the time.. 10% is highway at 65 mph +.

My decision was not between 35i and 50i but between 35i and 35d. Went with the d.
Got 29.7MPG on drive from Reno to SF last night according to trip computer. Had it at an easy cruise controlled 75MPH 90% of the drive cuz I'm going back Thursday evening and trying to see if I can do a little running around town these two days and still complete the return trip on a single tank.

btw, just for the record, I did my due diligence on this prior to buying.
C&D observed economy was 19 MPG with the fat sport summer tires (and those guys aren't light on the throttle):

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...e35i-road-test

and fuelly users showed average economy ranging from 18-21.5 MPG for all post-LCI N55 based xDrive35i.

Have you verified that your computer is accurate with the displacement method? Those figures seem close to what mine would probably show. Problem is that my computer is just off by 2.5-3 MPG.

Ho Hum averaging over 25 mpg with my 2013 Diesel

This is very mixed western long Island and NYC traffic also. Plenty of power. Can only imagine how much better an 8 speed automatic would make it.

Of course having said this I rented a standard CHevy Cruze in Louisiana for two days this week. All highway at an average of 70 and the little car made 36 mpg. Drove pretty well too but I must say getting into my X5 this morning was quite nice.

One other note. Our other diesel is a GL 350 ( 2013 ). That car is flat out amazing in terms of mileage consistenly getting 30 mpg on the highway. It is super quiet. Cannot say which one I like more though...the MB is more luxurious and peaceful but the X5 is special. Glad I am lucky to have both.

Unfortunately I have not.. I normally do with my other cars I've had which were pretty much accurate when I calculated the gas mileage manually.. I expected the same with the X5.

BTW my computer is pretty darn accurate

It is correct within .5/mpg versus my manual check when I fill the tank.

It is amazing, everyone's focus on MPG on a $50k+, 300 (or 400 or 500) HP performance SUV
