Question Chevron Techron?...issue??

Ok, 2 nights ago I emptied a bottle of the Techron Concentrate into my tank, then topped off with about 14 gallons. Very shortly after while running at about 80mph in M5 (step trans) and around 3200rpm, I gave it the gas fairly good accelerating. It started shuddering really noticeably. I replicated this in M6 also, albeit a bit less rpm. Yesterday while getting on the freeway here, it did the same shuddering/miss at about the same rpm/speed and gearing again. I also got my first ever SES red light. Now, today it seems to be running better than prior to me adding the Techron. I have my tune out currently, will replace this weekend, so I cannot pull any codes right now. I had her in the dealership getting some minor last minute warranty issues done, and wanted to end the warranty period like a "good boy". Warranty ended yesterday. Anyway, I cannot seem to replicate the shuddering now & she runs like I just stole it.

Has anyone ever had an issue similar to this? As stated, I topped off the tank after adding the Techron bottle, was shuddering/missing in a higher gear load, but seems to really be getting lots better the more I burn this tank of fuel up.....maybe I'm crazy but I'm thinking the Techron had something to do with this. I've never ever had misfires nor thrown codes, with the exception of a tail light!

I am wary of all additives and only use top tier premium fuel which has cleaners built it. They should be sufficient and a resent spark plug change after 160K km confirmed that the tips are uniform in colour and without any fouling. Premium fuel is all that you need.

I would top up the tank to dilute the additive more then go for a long drive.

Usually a misfire under load is a sign of bad wire, coil or plugs but unlikely in a newer BMW. If you got water in the fuel that might cause this symptom. Some service stations have poor underground storage facilities and buying fuel after a rain storm can be a problem. It's happened to me.

Just a few thoughts for your consideration.

yes I hear you, I always fill up with a top tier petro. Always the highest grade available here (91 oct). Plugs were change at the dealership about 3000 miles ago also. Possibly it was just a coincidence. But it is driving a lot better as the fuel level goes down. I've burned up half a tank in the past 2 days driving in town as much as possible. Who knows...

thanks

Techron is essentially what BMW used to relabel and unless there was some really strange forulation 20oz of Techron in say 16 gals of high octane isn't going to cause any issues. Techron is the only fuel injection cleaner worth much and I have never had issues with it in any of my BMWs to include my 335.

thanks fun2drive, that's exactly why it's the only additive I've ever used. Because I know it's essentially the same thing BMW repackages. I use it about every 5000 miles. Maybe it was a bad batch or possibly the gas was funky. It just seems odd that as my fuel level has gone down, I'm not able to replicate an issue that did not exist prior to adding the Techron. Who knows, I'll put the JB back in this weekend hopefully and pull codes & see I guess....appreciate your comments

I just normally use 93 octane Chevron with Techron gasoline, so I see no reason to buy a concentrated bottle and throw it in the tank, much less Techron, since I am using it daily, if you will. Anecdotally, this is the first time I hear of issue running a bottle of Techron through a tank of gas on here.

It's possible you got some bad gas, or the techron released some crud somewhere along in the fuel delivery.

Had the same thought on crud since the issue cleared itself.

Chevron Techron?...issue??

Thanks Kurgan, the potential crud release came to mind early on for myself. I always get gas at the same particular new station here. It's a Phillips 66, so I tend to think it wasn't that. I appreciate all you guys. Thanks

Decades ago, BMW dealer service would charge for a bottle of Techron. That's when Chevron started to bill it as a standard additive in their gas. I have been using Chevron with Techron in every BMW I have driven (I have driven nothing but BMWs for 30 years!) and never had any issues with engine irregularity.

Cal, this was several months back. At the time, the car had about 44K on mileage. At the time of my original post, there were new plugs installed about a month prior. After that tank of fuel had been used, all was well; therefore my thinking is that just maybe, the Techron really had just flushed some "crap" through the system! ? ! Now, currently, my baby is in the dealer getting 2 new VANOS adjusting units and a Low Fuel Pressure sensor along with the Oil Filter Housing gasket replaced. I should finally get her back on Tuesday/Wednesday...Are you thinking walnut shell blasting??..

A person should not blast the crunchy walnut shell before its time, in my opinion. Maybe 50k, certainly 60k, whether it needs it or not.
