Opinions on this 2002.

My neighbor is consideing buying this 2002. I don't know a lot about earlier BMW's. Do you think the price is fair or do you notice any potential problems.

TIA

It's a 42 year-old car, there are a LOT of "potential problems". However, cars like this are usually bought by "do it yourself" types who are enthusiasts of a particular marque and model and love to get their hands dirty.

It's hard to say about the price, almost all cars like this look good in pictures - it's really about provenance and meticulous records.

PS: as an aside, I got my first speeding ticket in a 1971 2002, white just like this one.

The bane of cars of this era is rust. Look closely at the photo in row 6, picture 8 - showing the underside - there appears to be some rust coming though. It may be trivial surface corrosion, or may be a sign of something more severe. Certainly I would have an independent pre-purchase inspection done. Other than that the photos look good (other than that spoiler).

Thanks for your inputs, but the car was sold when my neighbor called to make a deal.

Deal with potential buyer fell through. My neighbor bought the car. It'll take about a week before it arrives in MA.

I guess that means he bought it without a pre-purchase inspection - that's risky.

I warned him, but he was hell bent on getting the car. The worst thing is that he didn't consult his wife about the car. As a matter of fact, he still hasn't told her.

2002s are great cars - let's hope this one is, too! Have the new owner peek in at http://www.bmw2002faq.com/, the place to be.
