When you hit the other buttons to move it back and forth, tilt etc, does the motor engage?

The switches in the seat molding might be either
1. disconnected for those actions
2. bad

they are pretty notorious from what ive seen from other people for going bad..

In looking at the seat side molding they are attached to, it really was a poor design on BMWs part, as the modling takes a lot of stresses as people get in and out of the car, and they break free...

however, i believe there is one motor for the forward back movement, up/down, tilt back and forth, and then a pump for the "bladder". maybe possible the motor is bad or has a bad connection...

Just a few thoughts...easiest one to check, the switches on the side of the seat...

im also not sure what fuse controls the seats. but if i were a betting man, it controls more than just seat functions and you would have other issues with electrical gremlins. check the switches first and go from there.

Here are the related drawings for the '98 BMW 750iL - Seat Assemblies.

Definitely double check the electronic switches before replacing anything else.

The plastic seat trim is almost certainly broken near the seat back. The extra movement can cause the seat control switches to become loose. There are 3 lower fixings for the trim which are all plastic push rivets, but they are surprisingly difficult to remove, unless you release the entire seat.

The car harness connects to the seat harness under the seat and is black pre facelift, yellow after. The car harness should have a loop that lies flat on the floor, to accomodate seat back and forth movement, without chafing on the underside of the seat. If it has been previously disconnected, make sure the harness is flat, and the locking part of the connector is in place.
