how much margin in used bmw from dealer?

hi i am thinking of buying a used 2011 328 xi with nav and the premium package with all options. this particular one has 38k miles and still under factory warranty.

how much below the dealer price should i make an offer? i did check edmunds kbb nadaguides etc and their number is below those websites..

the car has been sitting in their inventory for 2months now.

is there like a percentage level below their price that i should stay at?

Typically they can come off their initial asking price by $3,000 - $4,000 and still make an acceptable profit. After two months on the lot I would imagine there have been a couple of price reductions. Do you know if that's the case?

Google the vin and you may be able to find previous ads showing pricing.

This may not help as it is a UK example, but the stealer that sold me mine said "we only make £800 on each approved used sale, so unfortunately there's no room to budge on the price. If you were buying a new car, sure, I could knock off a couple of grand." Mine cost £13.5k sterling.

It was at that point I bent over the table, pulled down my trousers, and handed over my debit card.

They aren't going to voluntarily give you their lowest price. Best way to handle it is determine the price you are willing to pay for the vehicle and call them with your offer or go down to dealer with that offer and your checkbook or check from finance company and tell them take it or leave it. then you will see what their real bottom line is. imo all the kbb, nada, edmunds evaluators are high. you can look at sold vehicles on ebay to get a measure of price and also there is a new tool http://clearbook.truecar.com/ that might be useful. it usually comes in low that is why i like it. is this a cpo car you are looking at? if so there are $1k financing incentives for 11 3 series CPO's as well.

according to the carfax was this a trade in, lease return, go through auction?

I bought an 07 335i, 66k advertised at 22.8 ........ from a Landrover store. I new the sales manager ..... came out and whipped open his book and showed me what he had in it. Said I could have it for 21.5 ...... Said he already reduced it twice and gave me $1300 off. Said I was getting it for wholesale. He took it in on trade and my guess is he had 15k in it. They also took care of a headlamp repair that I discovered that cost them $800. So let's say I got it for 20,800. That's 2,000 off after two reductions.

There is no set price that they pay for a used car. If they can rape you, when you trade it, they make more money. If its on their lot 75 days, Im sure they are looking to move it. They may have 10k or have 1k in the car. Lowball them and just be prepared to walk away if you cant get to a price you want to pay

Key is walking away. Over the years I had more than a few phone calls with counter offers waiting for me when I got home.

In the pre-owned biz, 25% margin is normal. Look up wholesale price and there's your negotiation space.

BMW dealers may work with more, and CPO adds couple o'thou premium.

Luck!

If you want to pay 24k, then offer 23k - they will say there is no way it can be done and try to counter you, just walk away. They will call you back, the 1K cushion you left can be used to negotiate, but try for the 23k first. You just have to be willing to walk away.

Is this the only vehicle around that fits your needs? Tell them (and have VIN's ready) where and what you can get for similarly optioned vehicles. That may get them down if that is the particular 328 you want.
