Carmax car. Good idea?

Saw a car I really like. Don't know if it's a good idea or not. Probably not possible to buy a warranty at this point. Is getting a pre purchase inspection at a bmw dealer a good idea?

3 months ago I paid the same for my '11 328. No nav, no sun roof, no power seats (premium package?)

22,000 miles.

2 weeks ago the battery died. Replaced under warranty.

Word on the street is CarMax is a good place to sell your car, but not to buy.

Should I pass? I have have it shipped here for 40 bucks and they'll refund that if I test drive it. So I have to have the car services by carmax if I use their warranty?

Personally I would look for one with fewer miles, but the bells and whistles are not important to me.

CarMax offers a 5-day no hassle return and a 30 day warranty standard. All cars sold from CarMax qualify for their extended warranty. Details of this warranty are outlined on their web site. Check the "Warranty & MaxCare ESP" tab for them.

This is what made me comfy buying from CarMax. Googling showed they honor it but will take time cutting the check. I paid $31K for a 10.3K mile E93 328i almost this time last year.

IMO for that price with 57K miles I'd hesitate but am no expert on what E90s go for, just feels high. Can buy a 2014 320i for not 'that' much more if bells and whistles can be lived without.

CarMax starts the price high and keeps dropping every week or two until it sells. My car had a bunch of issues even at 10.3K miles - all sorted out now so it was a good buy. They gave a decent trade-in and it's one of the few times I did not sell the old car privately.

Bought one car (07 E91), sold it, and sold one more to Car Max. I've had several cars valued there for free. I think they are a decent place to buy or sell a car, providing you pay attention to their prices.

Exactly. The five year old CR-V I traded in was sold for ~$17K yet I paid $19,900 for it brand new with ~48K less miles on! Gave me $14K as a trade IIRC which I was pretty happy with considering the tax offset.

Carmax Extended Warranty is awesome. I bought all my cars except for my BMW through them and always seem to make money off their warranty (unfortunately the higher perf cars tend to need more attention). I was able to take it to the dealer, Firestone, independant shops, and Carmax. Only diff is it was a $50.00 deductible at Carmax and $75.00 everywhere else.

That story is exactly how I felt with my repairs! The cars I kept are running like clockwork and no major issues yet. I've had over 6K in extended warranty repairs on approx $2500 in Carmax Warranty. The CEO Rick Sharp from Circuit City back in the good days, started Carmax and back then we had a great extended service plan in the electronics stores. If we couldn't repair it, we replaced it. He basically took that philosophy to Carmax and in hopes of selling lots of extended warranties and play the odds game that not all cars bought with a MaxCare policy would need expensive repairs. Sounds like it is working to this day! I even bought a car my wife hated and they let me take it back for a refund or exchange no questions asked.

I bought my BMW from Carmax. The details listed above sound like what mine is, however I have seen different policies stated online from store to store or state to state. There are some other differences in how they work too, for example at the time I think maybe CA was the only state where "dealers" could make a commission, whereas everywhere else all they cared about was selling anything at all, and making the customer happy.

I have no intention of bringing my car to Carmax for any warranty repair. Straight to the BMW specialty indy it would go, if it wasn't something I couldn't do myself. It is good until summer of 2015, it cost me about $1800, so basically about 3.5 years on top of factory, or about $515 yearly. If I did it over again I wouldn't have bought it, but I know so much more now, less fear, see how low the miles are, take way too good care of it. It was for the peace of mind, and never having a car as remotely as nice (or complicated) as this, it was definitely worth something to me. But the catch was that I buy it that very day, or I don't get to at all! I had 30 days for a full refund, prorated after that, or I could transfer to new owner if he/she wanted to buy the remainder.

I overpaid for my car, I knew it too at the time, but I was sick of shopping and of myself to a point, and it just screamed out to me, whereas with others I was, shrug, hmm, meh... This jives with posts above, I bought the car even before it had a chance to make it on to the website, I probably got it the day of?

I had double digit BMW dealer contacts, though a few of them I never met, as they were contacts given to me by friends. I tried as well as I could, and they had their chances to work something out with me. I also tested the private party market briefly. Happy with my experience, it was a car with less miles, in better cosmetic condition, for less money than any CPO or demo I could work with. IIRC, on the day I bought my car, there wasn't a single E92 MT on the lot at the four closest BMW dealerships to me.

I think it is way too much for this car with high miles. I did a KBB evaluator and best case comes up to $20398 and that is supposedly in excellent condition.

IMO it doesn't matter what you paid as long as you're happy. Sometimes you find that one and you've gotta have it. I had the same thing with my previous X5. I knew I was paying more for it than I could a different one. But the one I bought was exactly what I was looking for and in the end I was very pleased with it. Never had a regret buying it.

I did 2 vehicles from carmax and had good experiences. Got extended warranties on both for a fair price as well. They also gave me a better trade in price on both trade in's than I could get privately, strangely. I was gonna do carmax again for my 328, but I actually saw better prices at the BMW dealership........AND I got a way better rate on my financing!

well I got my 07 335i at carmax, during the 30 day warranty they paid for the radio to be reprogramed, and they replaced those frayed cords on the hard top convertible, I did purchase the extended warranty and last week they paid to have the ABS replaced and now the car is in the shop for the Steering wheel sensor, which they are paying for too

so I would say carmax is a decent place to purchase a car

How did the PPI go? It seems like you have had three issues in the short amount of time that you have had the car. At least you have the warranty

Sold a few cars to them. Usually try to get an offer from the dealer & one from CarMax when its time for one to go. Over the last few years two went to CarMax & one to BMW. Prices were fair & the cars were in good shape.

Word on the street is CarMax is a good place to sell your car, but not to buy.
And you base this solely on the fact that your battery died?

I was trying to illustrate the value of buying a car under a factory warranty, and the OP would not have one with that car.
