I'm a little confused....

Did an oil change today. Had the front Wheels on ramps, as I've seen in some DIYs. Drained all the oil and changed the filter. The car sat about an hour before I drained it. I only put in 6 & 1/3 quarts of oil in the hopes of having the oil level show less than MAX on the computer readout, so I could get the level exactly where I would want it. Upon completion, I came to find the oil level still showing at MAX? Did all the oil not drain out because of the front being elevated? Or might my oil indicator be bad?

Also....I'm not sure how sensitive the oil level indicator is because this is the 3rd oil change, and it has always shown exactly at the max line, being this last one doing myself with a little less oil. I read somewhere it may take a little time for the indicator to adjust. I only warmed up the car enough to get a reading then parked it. Maybe in the morning I may get a different reading? We shall see.......I want a ----ing dipstick!!

There was a thread here back when talking about how the "indents" work but I can't recall the details. I wouldn't sweat it man. Maybe you'll only need to burn a few drops of oil for the indicator to decide to go to the lower indent. FWIW, I think my last two (and I should also say my first two) DIY changes I only put in 6.0 quarts, and I think it was right where it should be... however some months later I'd have to fill her up with say half a bottle. I'm not sure I ever had to do that with dealership oil changes, but I'm not 100% sure. Age, coincidence, I dunno, but I wouldn't sweat it man.

A tip for next time you change the oil Bigrob - don't leave the car for an hour before you drain. Get the engine nice and hot, then drain straight away. The oil will flow much better and ensure as much of the old oil leaves the engine as possible.

Your worrying WAY too much! Max just means don't add more. Your fine.

I think Max is within a half quart, so if you put in 2/3 less than full and there is some left in there, you are close enough to full to indicate full still.

Just drain it well and put in exactly what they call for and you should have no issues.

I'm a little confused....

I checked my car same day as well and it was showing empty after the oil change. Two days later it showed max level so I assume it takes some time for the sensor to adjust. Just my .02 cents....

I think the sensor is a "close enough for government work" especially since it only functions with the motor running & oil is suspended in the engine, not all in the pan. The oil will drain on ramps, the plug is at the back of the pan. Filling to spec if you change the filter will no overfill the pan. As was mentioned above change the oil as soon as you shut down to keep the crap in suspension. No point in changing it after all the particulate matter has settled to the bottom of the oil pan.

BTW if you are really really worried about it measure what you take out & if the sensor had been tripped for an oil add you know you can put a bit more back in than came out.
