Caught by cop with 8500 x50 on

Was on HWY 580 today, cars were about 75+ mph, I went ahead to pass a suv, then saw 2 cops parked on the right side, about 600 ft away, I reduced to 75, still pulled over for a ticket, he said I was at 89mph, he said he used laser, but didn't print the record, my 8500 gave me nothing, I used 8500 and V1 on my cars for last few years, zero ticket, I doubt he used laser or radar, maybe just by eyes? anyone had like this before? should I ask him for the laser record before I sign the ticket? any suggestion for better laser detector? like 9500ix or Max? thanks in advance!

Was that 580 through the Livermore Valley-road construction lowered speed to 55?

Yes, was there, he didn't put 55 limit, still put 65, so 24 over, how do you know was there? I think cops there are very hungry.

Time for a laser jammer...I think for your detector to show up the laser, the laser has to be pointed to it directly.

Are there any portable all-in-one radar detector/laser jammers?

I'm curious about jammers. In my jurisdiction they are illegal. So if a cop points at you and your knee jerk is to lift off the gas pedal and he receives an "err" message - won't he just pull you over and tear you car apart looking for the jammer, take and charge you for that offence?

The OP should have asked the officer if he could see the equipment with the picture of his plat and the speed reading. If providing that information at trial is part of the prosecutors case and it is missing, he might have a chance. Of course the courts make the assumption that the police don't lie so I'm not sure that will help him. Better to have asked at the scene.

Good luck.

My Blinder HP-905 jammer has saved me a bunch of dough. Pretty discrete, even tells you what brand of laser gun it is jamming. Once you hit a reasonable speed turn off the jammer, and cruise on bye. It's pretty bad ass.

Hhmm the OP was doing 89 and complains over this fine for being 24 over 55?
No chance, when you 've been stopped.

I've driven that stretch of a couple times a week and have never seen CHP on the shoulder doing any radar for a long time. Plus there really isn't any room as that stretch of freeway is undergoing widening and not much room for them.

When I drive it now I pay particular attention to the lower speed as I indicated. Maybe they are cracking down because even at 65 everybody is passing me. You are lucky he put 65 not 55 as traffic fines are doubled in construction zones.

One thing I do to get out of tickets, and I only do this if they aren't writing a warning and are about to write a ticket. I ask them to see their license to operate the laser or radar gun. Every officer that uses one has to have a license. If they don't have the license they can't legally write you a ticket. You'd be surprised at how many don't have one. If they used radar and have shown me a license to operate the radar gun, I ask them to see the calibration log and when was the last time they had the unit calibrated. You'd be surprised at how many don't have calibration logs and they are to be done monthly. If they have neither or even one item, i tell them it would be better to write me a warning because I'm documenting that they were missing info and when I show up in court and you couldn't provide the documentation showing you had a license or calibration the ticket will be thrown out. So far I've never had to go to court. Knocking on wood....

I have been in law enforcement for over 17 years, I have never been issued a "license" to operate a radar gun. Yes, they are suppose to be calibrated at the beginning of each shift. We were not required to show the calibration log to an offender, in fact, the few times I actually ran radar, only one guy ever asked to see the display. I didn't like to write citations, when I was on patrol, I had better things to do, plus I think they are very negative experience, but when I did they were always high quality, DUI, Suspended License, Reckless Driving, etc.

That's the law in Arkansas, it may be different in other states?

Radar detector won't protect you from laser. If it did in the past you were just lucky.

But could I ask him to show me the laser print out record that indicates my speed? thanks.

Each state may be different but in Illinois, the PO doesn't have to show you anything. You have the right to request a court date to challenge the citation, but in my experience as a police officer, unless you have indisputable evidence that you weren't speeding, you are likely to lose.

It's a shame. I don't think people should be convicted of speeding if it's one man's word against another's. It poses the risk of abuse. The accuser cannot also be the witness. While I'm sure most police are honest, I doubt all are. There probably are some jealous types who just don't like BMW drivers.

That's why I find the European system of cameras to be vastly preferable. It's objective and infallible. You can back it up with a limited number of mobile speed enforcement units equipped with cameras as well.

Speed enforcement in the US is a very poor system of justice and doesn't live up to the standard America should aspire to as a beacon of liberty.

You are absolutely right. In fact, even if you agree that you are at fault, these are reasonable questions. I find here that if you are no more than 10 or so MPH over the posted speed you generally dont get ticketed. If you are passing a whole line of cars who are doing the speed limit or a little over, guess who gets the attention.

Not to beat a dead horse here....but, I never met another cop who was jealous of BMW drivers, maybe a Porsche(heh,Heh). There is no value to falsifying a traffic citation, why bother to stop someone, unless you have probable cause. I always have to laugh about people saying we arrest for no reason...who wants to write all of the reports. As far as speed cameras and red light cameras, I think they are great. However, tons of people hate them, because they forget they are there, then get a citation in the mail and flip out. I was living in the Phoenix valley, which several years ago, had several of the most dangerous intersections in the US. There are not enough police to deal with all of the traffic violators. After the red light cameras were installed, the follow up study showed that accidents were down, which is the whole reason for traffic enforcement. I am sure that many people think they can handle a car and should drive as fast as they want....but, plenty can not, regardless of what kind of car they drive.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the V1 is the best detector made at detecting laser. With that said, radar detectors are really no good for laser protection. As other have mentioned you need to invest in a laser jammer if you want to be protected from laser. The V1 will sometime pickup laser scatter and could possible say you on occasion, but if you are specifically being targeted by laser then the V1 nor any other detector is going to save you.
