740i Smoking, won't start, help please!

Hi,

I was trying to sell my 2001 740i M Sport Classic body style, a buyer took it on a test drive, parked it and the car stopped running. The car turns over, misfires, but won't start. I replaced the crank sensor, but the car still won't start. Smoke comes up from the passenger's side around the ABS Unit.

I replaced the timing chain guide rails about 2 years ago, but now they need to be replaced again. Besides that, the car is in good shape. Any ideas why the car won't start? Thanks!

+1 Get codes. Did you replace the crank sensor because you had a code for it? Either way, did you replace it with a Bosch sensor? When does the smoke occur? If it was after driving, it's probably just oil from a leaking vcg hitting the exhaust.

Saying the guides need done but otherwise.... Many of these cars are junked/parted because of that issue.

Wow, something must not have been done right to have to replace those guides again within 2 years.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah a nightmare, trusted the wrong, certified foriegn motor mechanic shop and got jacked. $4200 to them for repairs then $2100 to another mechanic to fix their mistakes, now the guardrails, which are plastic, cracked. As far as the codes to see why the car won't start, I just have a OEM Meter, can't start the car to drive it to get it put onto a machine. The crank sensor was a BMW original part.

Code readers are fairly cheap at your local autoparts store. I think i paid maybe 30 bucks for mine. It gives me the codes, then i do a quick search on the inter webs. You could spend alot on one that will tell you what the code is with description, but a cheap one will do the trick just fine. The one i bought even resets and clears the codes for me.

autozone is where i think i got mine. Probably a good investment for you to keep around in your pile of tools...

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Got a code reader(thanks, ou18, didn't know where to look for one), the codes were P0011 Camshaft Position Timing Over Advanced System Performance Bank 1, P0021 Camshaft Position Timing Over Advanced System Performance Bank Bank 2, P0171 System Too Lean Bank 1, P0174 System Too Lean Bank 2. I changed the camshaft position sensors left and right, but I'm still coming up with these codes and the car still won't start and I've already changed out the crankshaft sensor. Any suggestions? Thanks again for your help.
