Question When did the E89 get the N55?

I thought that all 2013 E89's had N55's.

Imagine my surprise when I did a search on my VIN and it showed my car had an N54!

When did the E89 get the N55?

My car's production date was 22.10.2012.

If it really does have an N54 does that mean I can convert it to an is?

You can research your car by going to:

Why convert? The N54 has much more tuning potential!

No. The N20, a turbocharged four cylinder, is in the Z4 2.8.

The N55 is the new 3.0 liter engine with a single twin scroll turbocharger. The N54, the predecessor to the N55, is basically the same engine with two turbochargers- one on the front three cylinders and one on the rear three cylinders.

The N54 is still used in certain cars where a slightly higher output engine is desired- like the 335is and the Z4 3.5is.

As bighorns said, the N54 is more tunable than the N55. BMW Performance has a kit that they can install which essentially turns a car with an N54 into an is (at least nearly). One prerequisite for BMW Performance to do this is that the car should be an M Sport or a Sport ordered with performance wheels. This increases the speed limiter and does a couple other tweaks which allows the conversion to be made more easily. Hence the reason I looked long and hard to find an M Sport 335i coupe with xDrive and a six speed as my track car/foul weather driver/potential tuner.

My understanding is that you can tune an N54 without the increased speed limiter and other factory tweaks but it gets a lot more involved very quickly.

Back to my original question, when did they finally make the change from the N54 to the N55 in the Z4?

Re: When did the E89 get the N55?

BMS offers a speed limiter delete option with the JB4!
