Unhappy Chuggy Start & Now Engine Management Light is on!!!

Hi guys

Had my X5 (2004 4.4i) for a while and starts bang on the money first time every time.

Except yesterday.

Started it, and it was REALLY rough. Chugging and threatening to stall with engine mangement light flashing on and off. So shut it off. Lock and unlocked and started it again.

Exactly the same, really rough idle. However, after about 10 seconds it smoothed out and and is absolutely fine. By which time the engine management light was permanently on.

However, two problems:

1) I'd like to know what cause it so I can stop it happenening again
and
2) The engine management light is now permanently on!!

Any help much appreciated!!!

Oh yes, forgot to mention...

The ONLY thing I did different yesterday is that I put the key in, switched ignition on without starting engine, put in gear, and the reverse gear also, then switched it all off again.

It was with ignition on but without starting for 5 minutes maybe.

Had to do this to test my parking sensors as one is out (found the bugger!) But then I start the car and got this headache!!

I've not checked the codes yet. I have recenty bought the BMW diagostics package from eBay (the same one used by main dealer apparently) and will get it installed over the weekend and scan.

But I wondered if anyone had had a similar issue before, or have any idea what may have caused it?

First, pull codes to see which OBD II codes have been triggered (report back or google them to know what they are/mean). If they all seem to be created by the intermediate levers...then reset/clear the codes and see if they come back (probably won't if it was the levers and they got back in sync).

Then do a google search for " BMW N62 intermediate levers"...read through some of those threads to see if the issue seems to be similar. Then, don't panic it it appears to be the intermediate levers...you can fix it, or learn how to live with it when it appears etc.
