2014 X5 production delays

I had placed an order for an X5 2 weeks back and was confirmed a production slot in week 48 (last week of Nov 2013), but I got an email from my dealer rep communicating as follows, which I quote:

"
I am sorry to let you know that Bmw just sent out a “urgent” email.

The email read that any 2014 X5’s on order that have a variety of option’s including rear view camera’s are going to be delayed until January production due to a lack of camera’s.

So what this mean’s is that you are probably looking at a mid to late February delivery on the X5 I am guessing."

Anyone else having the same issue?

I ordered mine on Oct 27 and the phone number forn checking production status says its due to complete manufacturing today (Nov 9). I haven't been notified about a delay.

Timing wise, I'm in the exact same boat. Dealer called me earlier this week and confirmed Week 48 production. So they were either uninformed, or something bizarre is going on.

Production Status

If you have the last 7 digits of your VIN you can check on the status of your order by calling 1(800)831-1117. When the recorded message starts, say "production status". Then it will ask for the last 7 digits of your vin. After you enter it, you will get a status update.

So can you now order a hitch from the factory or is just the prewiring?

Hitch

Mine is coming with a factory hitch that is a very different design where it's really hidden.

Have not heard of a factory hitch option, anywhere on the website?
Available on the 35D?

hitch

I simply asked for it when I ordered the X5. So maybe I'm mistaken about it being a factory option. Maybe its a dealer add on. Ill find out in a week when I pick it up and post what I learn.

Just called the number posted above and checked the status of my production order. "Vehicle being transferred to port of exit". Production week was 43 and my car has backup camera. You can use your production iD to check the status of your car.

Being in Supply Chain myself (not BMW), I can tell you some heads are going to roll with the F15 Camera Shortages....pushing delivery to Jan now.

BMW will have a hard time making Q4 with these type of build shortages. Somebody in Spartenburg will be sacrificed from Munich!

I have the following build going to my SA tomorrow for $74,300 (buying at $1k over invoice less $1k loyalty ..Net $68,515. He told me Dec delivery.
If I get pushed to Jan, I'm buying a nicely loaded Mercedes Benz GL450 right next door.

How did it go with the dealer? Is the rumor that these are being pushed to January accurate?

I chatted with my SA today and he showed me the email from BMW noting the production delays until January. It covers several different options, including rear and surround view camera options, some leather options (including leather dash), and I think one of the 20" wheel options.

Definitely a bit of a disaster on BMW's part.

I'm looking at getting a diesel, so this isn't a major impact on me since those weren't even supposed to begin production until December anyway. I can get an early January build date if I order within the next month or so.

Sorry for those of you impacted by this delay.

This is ridiculous. These are $60k+ SUVs. If cameras are an excuse for the delays, then there are probably thousands of X5s being pushed back. How DOESN'T order the rear-view camera?

I found out my X5 is delayed because of an oil level sensor false reading that requires a software update. Anyone else have this issue?

The delay IMO is unacceptable but with JIT inventory systems (If BMW uses) the slightest hick-up causes a massive ripple effect.

When I ordered my '12 ML 350 BT at the end of 2011 when they launched their redesign, back up cameras and xenon lights caused lengthy delays. The tsunami in Japan was credited for the supply issue and they eventually sourced additional suppliers but it was extremely painful waiting the additional 2+ months... First world problems.

I have all of the packages that involve the rear view camera, and per the 800# my vehicle just entered production. Hard to square that with what I'm reading about the parts shortages. Not sure what to make of it all.

I will pipe in with my own status on this. Ordered was placed on your 2014 X5 XLine on 10-28-13 (vehicle includes a rear view camera - code 3AG) and was provided an order production number the same day. I've been tracking the order for the past 2 weeks. As of 11-13-13 (16 days in), our vehicle has completed production and has been release to the carrier. I have not received any notices from tracking or by my dealership about any delays regarding the rear view camara. Maybe I just got lucky on this one??

If true, that is of course great news.

How does your dealer rep explain this disconnect?

If they have a parts shortage, it won't impact new builds until a certain point - when they run out of the parts. So it makes perfect sense that builds up to now are not impacted, but at some point in the future, they will be. I believe the OP indicated that his/her build date was the end of November, meaning the parts are likely running out at some point following these recently completed builds and those about to go into production, but before the end of November. (Though it looks like the OP is now hearing their vehicle is back on track, so maybe they resolved the parts shortage issue, or at least located more to support builds a little further out than originally anticipated).

Obviously, they know how many parts they have (either on-hand or scheduled to arrive) and they know how many scheduled orders require those parts, so they can determine exactly when they will run out unless the supply inventory changes.

They don't have to wait until Fritz looks on the shelf and notices they don't have any cameras left...
