Question BMW E30 M3 not used for years - What to do?

Hi all,

This is my first time posting on forum threads at this website, so maybe someone had posted on this topic in the past.

I have a close friend, his dad (who is retired) owns a BMW M3 E30 model. I don't know the exact year, but he definitely bought it when we were really small children. I visited his house in the past and have seen the car. He has not used the BMW M3 for many years, and it has been sitting on the driveway and there's no garage or car cover. My friend also told me that the car has less than 50,000 miles, so I think this car is a treasure. My friend's dad won't sell it, but he, my friend and I have talked about possibly restoring the car back to working condition.

So, I was wondering if there are any steps my friend and I should take to make sure the car is in working condition? Should we jump start it or replace the battery? Check for rust on the underbody? Do another oil change? Brake maintenance? Change fluids? Refuel the car? Or is it worth the effort to just transport the car to an independent BMW mechanic and him and his crew do the work? There is no body damage to the car. We live in the Boston, Massachusetts area, so the car also went through some snow storms.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The fuel system is going to be big problem
Drain the tank...has a drain plug
Change the filter.
Change the battery.
Jump T30 and T 87 at the fuel pump relay socket.
Listen at the back seat for in tank pump function and infront of the left rear wheel for main pump function.
If one or more pumps is AWOL, I would strongly advise you to have the injectors removed and cleaned, and pumps replaced.
If the car was run on ethanol, the tank may have some much scale in it that it would need to be cleaned, and resealed.

It will cost you....
