Steering becomes hard to turn after car warms up

I have a 2008 328xi and the steering usually gets hard to turn after the car warms up. I say usually because I could not reproduce the issue on the last 2 drives. Previous 5 drives it acted up after 10 minutes of driving. When the car is cold, the steering acts like normal.

It feels like the steering looses some power assist steering when this occurs. The steering becomes hard to turn at all speeds and doesn't return to center when driving.

It seems like the variable assist isn't working or something in a control circuit. The power steering pump makes no noise and there is plenty of fluid. The car tracks nicely otherwise.

Can anyone provide advice?

Your symptoms are opposite of any I have seen. I wish I could help. Has this car always been this way?
I ask because I wanted to know if any maintenance has been done on this car like power steering refill...

Maybe there is blockage somewhere and when the engine is shut off, the blockage falls out of place. When the ps pump kicks back on, it gets carried back to a pinch point and blocks the fluid.

Open up the ps reservoir when you turn the steering wheel. You should see the fluid moving. If its not, you most likely have a blockage somewhere or the pump could be failing.

It appears that the problem is solved. I worked with Roger the Service Manager at New Country BMW (HFD, CT) and he ended up replacing the Lower Steering Shaft (PN 32-30-6-784-845). The team at New Country was very professional and did a great job. Glad it was under CPO warranty. I'm guessing it would have been 2 hours labor plus part. The mechanic reported that "the lower joint is stuck and can not be moved across the middle, therefore the shaft is causing stiff steering". The manager said it was more common on xi models.

The steering now feels more lubricated and I can feel the road again. We have our fun to drive BMW back!
