No more loaner cars?

My 2011 328 x drive is due for an oil service (~30K miles). I called to make an appointment and 2 dealers told me they no longer give loaners out for oil service because it only takes about an hour and I would have to wait for it. I ALWAYS was given loaners for any scheduled service. I finally gave the second place a hard time and said I would have to go to a different dealer and they said they would give me one but it probably wouldn't be a BMW (fine i don't care). What's with dealers cheaping out now? I have always gotten loaners since my first BMW in 2001, even for oil service.

I've had a similar reaction here as well. Worse though, I was quoted that completing the oil change in 1 hour may not be possible, it might take 2.

My dealer generally sets it at 2 hours work but is flexible about it.

For a scheduled by appointment oil change, I think that's horrible, don't you? It's one thing if I just roll up to the shop, but to be scheduled and be waiting on the car and it not be promised in 1 hour is silly. Ain't nobody got time for that!

For the past 15 years, my dealer has insisted on a loaner if the service will take more than about 90 minutes. But for an $79.95, 1 hour oil change, it has never occurred to me to ask for one.

No more loaner cars?

I once saw some lady demand a loaner and then call her SA a "dick" because he couldn't give her one. She also said the service was "****" and that she would take her "business" elsewhere.

She brought in a beat to hell E46 325i (I think.). What the service was for, I don't know. I just thought that was amusing.

Anyway, I don't think it's that big a deal though, luckily it was only a 60 minute oil change. If they denied you a loaner for something longer, then that would be cause for complaint. You should have told them that you had something to do and you couldn't afford to sit idly for an hour.

My local dealer is on its thirds set owners since I first bought my 2006 325xi, and with each change, it seems they are more and more reluctant to give out a loaner. Back in 06, a loaner would be offered when you dropped off the car, no questions. Now its to the point where you have to specifically request a loaner when you make your service appointment - and may be told there are no loaners available on that day.

But I was in Indiana this summer and had some trouble with the 2011 528i -- they offered a loaner right away (before I had a chance to ask), and because I was a late morning walk-in (drive-in?) they were out of loaners, so they gave me a voucher for a rental car from a nearby car rental agency. (Props to Dreyer & Reinbold in Indianapolis for making me feel like a valued customer, even though I live 600 miles away!)

Oil is usually done in 45 min to 1 hr. My dealer sets up certain times /techs to take care of it. It seem to work well. N4S

I don't know how it is in the US and other places but in Australia, you have to pay for the loaner. $30 a day. I think lexus is the only one here (from the luxury cars) that has a free loaner, personally I find it a bit sad. If I paid the highly inflated price as it is in Australia and then couldn't get a free loaner, I wouldn't be too impressed with what is considered a prestige brand.

Depends on how far you have to drive to the dealership. Some 'festers are hours away.

My previous dealer (E90) was a 45 min. (one way) drive. I chose to wait for the oil change...about 1.5 hrs. While waiting, I took full advantage of the free snacks and absconded with some of their donuts. It's all factored in.

My current dealer is about 15 min. away, so I'll schedule my mandatory oil changes early and wait.

I see you live in NJ, I live in NJ too but my BMW dealer is awesome. I recently took my BMW in for a oil change and unknowingly they looked me up and said i needed to get my brakes flushed as well. The BMW pretty backed up w/ a lot of other bmw owners getting service and my dad and I didn't want to wait 5hrs so my dad asked for a loaner car and they gave us a 2013 528i as a loaner for the day.

OK p&g, here's the key question: Now that you no longer need to fortify yourself for the long drive home, will your donut policy change?

Bring 'doggy bags' if they keep you waiting. Mine hold at least a dozen.

My NJ Edison dealer never gave out loaner for oil change alone, but sometimes oil change could take more than an hour because they don't work on it right away.
I just ask for drop off at work which is 10 minutes away. You can call for pick-up as well but I have coworker drop me off at the end of day.

Went to a couple of different BMW dealerships and they all require 2 to 3 weeks in advance notice to get a loaner. Never had that issue with Mercedes Benz. Same day no issues. Going in for an oil change. But I have rough idle issues that I want fixed. But I will have to hold off until the 25th since they have no loaners until then.

My dealer offers internet service, and has a quiet loft with desks. Plus has food.

Bring a laptop.

(The only reason I don't do this for oil changes is that my indy -- who doesn't offer internet service -- is closer to home. I wait, anyway. I change the filters, wiper blades etc. myself, which doesn't require a loaner.)

Fortunately this is not the rule in the USA. A loaner is treated like a rental, which means your insurance covers any damage to the car. If someone has a $3500 deductable, that is their own fault then.

Yes in US I believe it's pretty standard that the auto insurance on your car will cover any accident in a loaner/rental up to your policy limits but you would have to pay the deductible if you are at fault.

I have never needed or requested a loaner since I just have my wife follow me to the dealer where I drop it off. When it is finished I just have her take me back to the dealer to pick it up. I have a third vehicle that I use in the time between the drop off and pick up.

My dealer asks for poof of insurance and has a copy of my insurance on file. The vehicle is considered a rental car that they comp, so it is covered as a rental would be under my regular insurance policy.

Perhaps different states handle this differently?
