Transmission speed limiter?

So while driving this weekend I noticed (first time I have gotten up to this speed) that when once the speedo goes over 160 or on the gps around 255k that my car decides it doesn't want to be in 6th anymore and switch's down to 5th which throws the tranny in to some sort of safe mode. The first time it did in when i was DS... then a little while later I was in the Manuel mode and it did it again. With a quick restart of the car its fine and gives no problems. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this and what the fix is. I have a 07 328xi sedan. (Love Germany on weekends at night AVG highway speed from Czech boarder to Stuttgart was 232kph)

Car might not have enough power to pull top speed in top gear.

How I envy your countries highways and road laws…..where I live only pilots are allowed to go those speeds!
Have you ever tried driving any sort of distance at a pathetic 100 kph in a 335i just to avoid speed camera photos arriving in the mail box?
sigh

I thought that as well knowin that even in manuel mode itll down shift if completly floored and after the first time in ds i was carful to not have it floored and switching to 6th early. Given my car doesnt have a lot of power to get it over 250 in 6th not punching required a hill. But maybe it is just the way the trannys maped. In case i will start reseaching a remap. Has any else had this issue and would a tranny remap fix it.

In response to the gas shortage in the early 1970's the geniuses in Washington imposed a double nickel national speed limit of 55mph 88kph. It was finally dumped when people got smart & went after the jerks who imposed it voting them out.
