Should be fine; both sizes are the same overall diameter.

I tried something similar when I purchased my first set of winter tires from TireRack. They called after I placed the order online and suggested I change to the 225/45/17 tires. IIRC, it had something to do with the load range, weight of the car, and required pressure in the tires I selected.

Sorry to not be more specific, but it was 4 years ago, and the synapses aren't as young as they used to be.

Looking at tirerack, with 17" wheels, the 225-45-17 is recommended but the 205-50-17 is an alternative for the E90. Its fine. The only reason for them to recommend the 225/45-17 is that its a factory size and probably a little better on dry pavement.
