Another newbie looking to buy an X5

Hello everyone, yes is another newbie asking the same old question... should I buy an X5.

I have read a lot of great information on the forum, and there are so many great things people say about X5's and then there are all of the unfortunate dreaded issues that seem to come with ownership.

So here is the thing, I'm looking to buy an 03 X5 4.4 with 130K. I'm attaching the carfax and dealer link to the vehicle below... so what do you guys think?

I guess I'm willing to put up with maitance issues and little annoyances, and it seems like these M62 engines are good, so my main worries are the tranny and air suspension which I believe this particular X5's come with. I'm not dead set on this X5 but I like the color combo, any thoughts will be apreciated, thank you.

when you take it for a test drive take it on the highway and make sure the tranny shifts smooth, check for oil burning out of the exhaust since the m62 engines are known for valve seal replacement on high mileage engines which = big bucks. check everything make sure all controls work, play with all the buttons you see. buy it certified and get a warranty for it also that covers gaskets, drive train and electrical.
p.s. if you don`t need the power ,the m54 3.0i engine is a good strong engine and if you want the x5 with the m62 get it with under 100000km. Thats my opinion I`m sure others will give you theres soon.

if you live in an area that experiences winter, you might have problems with your driverside door...which I am currently experiencing and is a hassle to fix

Buying an X5.

Hi brought my 05 4.4 in May this yr. I have done 10,000 k since with no trouble at all and I drive it hard at times and tow a 6.8 m power boat. It has done 190,000k now and used about 2 litres of oil in the 10k. It is an absolute delight to drive, more grunt than Monica Selas and handles like a dream. I have had Japo 4x4 in the past all good but the Pajero V/6 i had last used to be in 1st gear up a hill to the sea with my boat on and the big B tows it up in 3rd !!!! I am so glad I brought it $19,500 in New Zealand $ New here they are $ 156,000 NZ $ Go for it you wont be sorry.

What are the specs? 3.0 X5? As "puddingboo" mentioned, it will be wise to have a mechanic inspect the control arms, tie rods, water pump condition, engine gaskets, transfer case leak, transmission case leak, etc.

Check service history always. If the history indicates lack of regular service and not done by authorised BMW mechanics who have used genuine BMW parts replacement, keep well away from it, otherwise it will be an unhappy experience.

Thanks, sure will do that. I got another question. Is anyone familiar with 2002 bmw x5 4.6? Worth buying for 13k?

It's a fair price, but 4.4s have big problems if not serviced by the proper people. 2002 ironed out a lot of issues resident in the introductory 1999 x5. Google your car model and year because there is quite a bit of info about the 4.4, and the 4.4 from 2002 onwards are very fuel efficient.

The 4.6 it's a special edition, that's what they say, kinda like M5. Any words on that?

Sorry, I mean 4.6, which is a monster of a car. Check service history before purchase, including all surfaces as well as underside for any signs of damage. Check oil levels and any leaks after driving. If all ok, you've got a collectors model at a decent price.
