Exclamation Climb to the Clouds 6, June 21 in the White Mountains of NH

Climb to the Clouds Six

Join us for the Sixth Annual Bimmerfester's cruise through New Hampshire's White Mountains and drive up the Mount Washington Auto Road to the summit of the highest peak in the Northeast. The 'high point' of the day will be an ascent of Mt. Washington (it is the "Climb to the Clouds"). It's possibly the most intense drive opportunity east of Pike's Peak. Braving a seven mile long, steeply twisting road without guardrails, with spectacular views, in occasionally very challenging weather, will be an adventure you'll not soon forget.

Along the way we'll cross a covered bridge, possibly dodge a moose or two, tour the Kancamagus Highway (a US Scenic Byway), and experience Bear Notch Road -the condensed Dragon's Tail of NH.

This years event will be held Saturday, June 21, 2014. Our event gets bigger every year and in keeping with this form, we are adding additional (optional) events for Friday, Sunday and Monday! More on this later!

If you'd like to get some sense of what this is all about, here's a link to last year's thread for C2C5. Take a look at the photos and read the comments. http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=678818

Schedule details are still being worked out but as in previous years the main events will include:
  • Driving on the Kancamagus Highway
  • Drive up the Mount Washington Auto Road (The Climb to the Clouds)
  • Saturday evening banquet and auction to benefit Survive the Drive (www.survivethedrive.org).
We will once again be visiting the Team O'Neil Rally School (www.teamoneil.com).

The cost for the event will be $35.00 per car (includes driver) and $7.50 per passenger, with no charge for children under 12. These charges are for pre-registration on the web site (this will be available December, 1st). Day of event registration will be $40.00 per car and $10.00 passenger. We encourage everyone to pre-register as it avoids a bottleneck collection for registration fees at the event itself and allows us to get going that much quicker!

All other expenses such as lodging, meals (including the banquet) and the toll for the Mount Washington Auto Road will be paid for individually.

We have a block of rooms reserved at the Omni Mount Washington Resort. Guests are able to book two, three and four nights at the special rate that we have secured with the hotel! PM CaptainAudio to obtain the booking code and book ASAP as the Hotel is filling up rapidly.

Official Website of Bimmerfester's Climb to the Clouds: http://www.ClimbToTheClouds.org

To sign up please do the following:
Details and updates will be posted on the c2c6 web site at http://www.ClimbToTheClouds.org

But Wait There's More!

This year the Mountain Washington Auto Road will open at 3:30AM Sunday Morning June 22 to afford us a once in a lifetime chance to watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean from the highest peak in the Northeast.

As we have previous years on Saturday evening we will have a banquet and auction to raise money for our charity of choice which this year will once again be Survive the Drive (www.survivethedrive.org). We encourage everyone to contribute items to be auctioned off. BMW of motorsports themed items are appropriate as are items that represent where you are from.

This year we have some great items available for auction including (but not limited to ) some highly collectable BMW and Motorsports related material such as die cast model cars signed by the drivers who drove the originals, posters signed by Sam Posey, Sir Stirling Moss, Bob Sharp and other drivers and several rare and collectable books by Mark Donohue, Sam Posey, Sir Stirling Moss, etc. and a limited number of the ultra-rare and highly desirable "He's Not The Stig" T-Shirts (picturedabove)

The C2C5 Auction web site is at:
https://www.24fundraiser.com/site/store/783

Is that road to the top of Mt Washington paved? I've only been on it in midwinter (when it was deep in snow). And, no, it was on foot, not in my car.

Part of the way it's paved, the rest it's not. Don't worry, skilled "professionals" will be there to assist and watch people fall off the side of the mountain.

I just hate rock chips. Maybe I will instead do the foot race up that road, in mid-June. I just need to do better, in my age group, than 1:52:59, to win.

I think I would like to attend and then turn the next few days into a backpacking trip. The black flies can be murderous in June, but if I do the Presidential Range, I will probably be high enough to avoid the scourge.

This is something to consider.

The unpaved portion is oiled and the speeds are very slow (15MPH and 5MPH when there is oncoming traffic) so rock chips are not an issue.

I have this problem with SLOW. I definitely dislike oil--especially on the track!

Luckily, the black flies eventually disappear, to be replaced by worse, mosquitos! I sure don't miss New England, though they will be having some snow up north for Thanksgiving!

Oil and rocks chips are not an issue. I have driven up that road every year and have never had an issue and I am meticulous about caring for my cars. I have not heard anyone else complain either.

Slow is not really an issue on a narrow road that is frequently blanket by thick fog, has no guard rails, a 1,000 foot drop and two way traffic. The MWAR is only eight miles long. Most of the time we are on regular roads.

Way less fun, obviously, than driving the passes in the Dolomites, Swiss or French Alps, or even our wonderful Washington state or British Columbia mountain roads! The MWAR looks a bit slow and sedate. Isn't there any auto race up there? I seem to recall one from my years on the right coast.

The surrounding roads, such as the Kancamagus Higway and Bear Notch Road are much more appropriate for spirited driving.

Done the Kanc many many times, shuttling from North Conway to/from Franconia Notch, for rock climbing, ice climbing. Even once with a couple of inches of water atop ice on the Kanc! Had to slow down.

I agree with CA. I have been to most of the C2C events and also very particular about the condition of my vehicle. To date, I have never had a problem with rock chips or other mountain related items.

Make sure you bring your BMW to C2C6 and not that Mercedes GrandpaMobile you showed up with on Saturday.

C2C6 is an enthusiasts event.

That thing didn't even have a manual transmission!

This is the only portion of the ride everyone drives prudently and for good reason.

On the Kanc or BNR, if you're following me, slow won't be an issue. We do drive with some reserve in the areas most likely to get the attention of the local gendarmes but there are many stretches of road where you'll get to exercise your elbows.

We'll be taking the 3er to C2C6. Can't wait to see everyone and enjoy the twisty NH roads.

1) Don't worry about the rock chips. This is our sixth year and have yet to have one person report an issue. The speed is too slow on this part of the road
2) There will be plenty of good driving. While the MWAR is slow and sedate (you can't go fast, the road is sometimes not even wide enough for two cars), there will be plenty of places where spirited driving will happen.
3) MWAR presents it's own challenge. Knowing when to shift between 1st and 2nd. Downhill is even more challenging

Also, as a person who has done Germany and Switzerland driving - both autobahn (meh) and higher speed mountain driving (the real fun) I can tell you this trip is worth it. It doesn't disappoint.

I think a certain fester should sue you for defamation of character. Associating him to that picture!
