Burnt Rubber / Candle Smell???

I have a '07 328xi with 100,700 miles on it. On a couple of occasions in the past two weeks while idling at a traffic light, I noticed a brief smell inside the cabin that resembled burnt rubber, but it quickly went away. Yesterday, it happened again but has not gone away. I could not smell it outside the car when I parked in an outdoor lot, but did notice it once I arrived home and parked in the garage. This is when I noticed that it actually smells more like a candle that has just been extinguished. I do not see any visible smoke (yet). I've inspected underneath the best that I can with a flashlight and don't see any plastic bags. I have not observed any fluid leaks on the garage floor. I lifted the hood and without opening or moving anything, do not see any obvious signs (to me) of leaks. Other than the service light that came on a couple of weeks ago when I turned over 100K, I am not getting any dash alerts. Anyone have any ideas of what could be the culprit here? I have scheduled a service visit for tomorrow, but would feel better if I knew a little more about what to be looking for. Keep in mind, I am a girl and not mechanically inclined...

Thanks!

odd smell

We also own a 2007 328xi and have noticed a similar smell recently. Only thing I have noticed is the power steering fluid being low. Let us know what the dealer finds. Thanks Gary

My problem is similar to yours but besides the burnt plastic/rubber smell I noticed smoke coming out from my hood. I decided to pull over at a gas station and let my car cool down a bit. After about 10 - 15 mins I started my engine and the smoke was gone and smell was not as bad. So I headed home as quickly as I can, I was kind scared I'd break down or something. The drive home from the gas station to my house was about 5 mins didn't notice any smoke while driving home but as soon as I got home and parked my car I saw the smoke coming out from the hood again along with that burnt smell. When my popped my hood it looked like everything was good no leaks or anything. I don't know what could be the problem why my car was doing this. Anyone have any advice or similar experience? I'm taking it to the BMW specialist sometime this week. By the way I drive a 2007 BMW 328i

Synthetic oil has a burt rubber smell when it lands on a hot exhaust. If you shine a flashlight on your catalytic converter along the passenger side of your engine you'll likely see evidence of oil drip from the rear corner of your valve cover.

Well I actually just check my car and your exactly right, you nailed it ! Is this a really big problem? Will my car break down on me? What should I do now after seeing that it is a leak. I'm suppose to bring it in to the shop next week. But until then, any suggestions??

If it's like mine was it's probably just an occasional drip so you should be fine until next week. It's not under pressure so it's not going to pump your oil out or anything like that. Just check it daily until you can get in to get your valve cover gasket changed.

You're very welcome and I hope I saved you some worry. As long as it's just an occasional drip it's not going to be a problem until you can get it in next week.

Hey shenady, I understand how you feel. I'm a female too, and I don't know anything about cars and especially car problems. I have a similar problem but I had a little smoke coming out of my hood. From what I've learned you should check your fluids and see if you need to maybe put some more in. I guess there's like a pan at the bottom and you might not see any leaks because it drips in that pan. I don't know if what I said is much help but I'm learning more and more about BMW's I drive a 2007 BMW 328i also
