Question Engine Ticking Video - Can someone help me identify the problem?

Hi guys,

So I was wondering if some one could help me identify the ticking that is making my car. I have a 1997 Euro 328i Coupe with 129K km (80K miles).

I have recorded and uploaded a video on YouTube hoping that some of you guys will identify very easily my problem. This I did in August, so I may say that by that time it's when the ticking started.

I appreciate your time & help.

RAA

some noises sound normal (injector ticking), and the video was rather vague.

is this noise more pronounced @ a specific rpm??

if it is more pronounced @ the front of the engine where the bump of the valve cover is then you could have a vanos issue beginning.

Sounds normal. That's just what your fuel injectors and other moving parts sound like when the engine is running. A lot of that noise is typically concealed by the engine covers, which you have removed during this video.

I removed the Valve Cover in order to try to identify better the source of the noise.

This ticking can be heard from the front right wheel fender. That's how I realized of this, as I heard it echoing with another car at a red light.

Sound is heard on idle, but I can't confirm that at higher RPM's as I have a Magnaflow exhaust.

Huh... the exhaust manifold gasket leak never crossed my mind. I'll take a look into it and find in fact that's the problem.
By the mileage my car has, would that be a normal failure?

Thanks!

No, but that's what it sounds like to me.

Take a thin strip of paper and hold it next to the head/exhaust manifold joint with the engine running. It'll blow around if there's a leak.
