Leaks

It's pretty cold where I am and I garage my 1990 325i and start it every now and then. It recently has leaked a good amount of coolant when I started it the other day and it was smoking off the oil pan. no idea where it could be coming from. Also, not too thick but it's obvious the exhaust is white smoke. Does that mean I'm burning oil?

No, that's water vapor, either from condensation in the exhaust system, or (worst case) you've got an internal coolant leak, like a blown head gasket or cracked head. Is there antifreeze in the cooling system? What level of protection?

You need to find out where the coolant is coming from that's dripping on the floor. If it's losing coolant, you stand a good chance of overheating it. I hope the two symptoms aren't related. You haven't overheated it AT ALL, have you?

What you really need to do is pressure test the coolant system to look for the leak. You need a special tool to do this you might be able to rent on at your local parts store. It has an pump that hooks to the coolant reservoir then you apply the right amount of pressure as though the car was running, and you should be able to see your leak ,if it's a hose or the heater core, if your not seeing coolant or if your seeing coolant along the head gasket the gasket is bad ad will need to be replaced. The other place to look after you pressurize the motor is to remove to spark plugs if you see coolant in the cylinders the head gasket is bad .If it's bad when the head is pulled you need to have it checked for cracks by a machine shop and checked for warping as well ,I'd recommend having the head resufaced just to make sure you get a good seal with your new gasket.Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll be a stupid hose.

it is certainly a rare breed that will want to own an E30. Sure they look GREAT, they are fun to drive. But is it really worth it all. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Being a two time offender that is all I can say.

I know I have my baby I'm rebuilding and a spare 89' 325is and they're mine all mine.Mine has been diving me nuts for 10+ yrs but I'd never sell it ,I might buy it another friend I've been thinking it might like a E36 M Coupe, or maybe an E34 540i w/6 speed.I've been looking at both on EBay all week.

I'm going to get to it soon. Really don't even want to look lol but I haven't even driven the car really. Just bought it and think I just want to send then block into a machine shop anyway. everything leaks. rear main seal. can't tell about the head gasket, I think the oil pan gasket, power steering but not big problem, valve cover gasket, already have new one and the rubber seals but I need to do valve adjustment while I'm at it and there is 215,000 on the engine
