BMW or Mercedes? Road test

Hi all, I have a 535xi 6MT and dropped my Sprinter Van off for service at the local Mercedes dealer. I was surprised that my loaner was a 2010 E350 4matic luxury. I thought to myself, we'll this will be nice. I had a three hour highway drive and about one hour in mixed use stop and go, some curvy roads and then back again the next day. My review

First of all, NAV doesn't allow inputs while car is moving! Really!!
Seats are terribly uncomfortable, after my 20 position seats in the BMW, nothing else compares.
Road feel is kind of numb, nothing like the steering and turn in of my 535.
Stereo system is actually WORSE than BMW, I know, hard to believe.
Very plain vanilla looking interior, I was really expecting more, to sum it up I was simply underwhelmed!

I say that BMWs are for people who like to drive and Mercedes are for those who like to be driven.

I've owned several 3-series, four 5-series, 2 Z4s, three SLKs, three C230 Kompressors, and an E300D. All have their own pros and cons, but I'm a diehard BMW fan for life. Lexus is the the same way with their Navigation and it drives me flippin' crazy when I have to drive my mom's RX400h.

I think it is all about personal preference. I recently switched sides to Mercedes-Benz. Part of the reason was that I could not deal with all of the reliability issues with this car anymore. While we are all enthusiasts, parts in a BMW tend to break too soon. How many people replace water pumps in cars before 60K?

I do think that the BMW had slightly more accurate steering, although I enjoy driving the Mercedes more. Part of this might be the switch from a 6-cylinder to a V8.

I am no expert here, but AFAIK from test drives, the MB is going to have a softer ride.
However i dont think it is an equal comparison. The MB350 is more like a BMW/3.

I have driven the 3 as a loaner and I was not at all impressed. It is small and (to me) uncomfortable.
It is supposed to be ~entry level and it seems that way. I consider it to be a BMW/Camry. LOL
My 5er is in a different league. It is considered "executive" size and it is different.

My dad had the 2010 E350- nice riding car, and that's it. Not fun to drive at all. He just got the 2014 E350, but haven't seen it yet, he lives 700 miles away. He loves the Mercedes - he's 85.

By the way, I'm just about done with BMW. If I'm going to buy a car that drives like a Lexus (ie the F10), I'm going to buy a car with legendary Toyota reliability. the new 435 looks nice, maybe that's my next ride.

E550 is the bomb! Almost did a 550 a few years ago, different league than the 350.

Why? Because of it's engine size?

Because it's the first and cheapest 5 series. By definition, it is an entry level model.

That used to be true but the latest 5 series is not competitive with the Audi A6 or the MB E350. The new 5 is overweight, does not handle that well and rides poorly ( damn runflats). It's engine is basically its main feature. I hope it is more relaiable then the E60 535. I am interested in driving the new E class when it arrives in 2015. Until then, the A6 is the clear choice. The new 5 needs to lose some weight and the runflats.

Actually you may be confusing this with the C 350. The E is definitely in the same same size category as the 5 series, the C and the 3 series are in the same size category.

I don't disagree with your statement. BMW doesn't make a vehicle that I'm completely attracted to anymore. The Z4 - MAYBE, but the 3, 5, 7, X1, X3, and the new X5 aren't appealing to me. The 328 diesel wagons are looking better, but when I built one online, it topped $60k for a 3-series.

Lets face it, BMW has moved on. Not sure what the latest sales figures are, but they are doing very well with the new product line. I'm giong to check out the 435i, if I can deal with a coupe of that size. That will option out in the low 60s. I can do a low content Porsche Cayman for that money, or a nice used 911...

What is the old saying, if you aren't a BMW guy, you are a Mercedes guy. Or vice versa. Just appeal to a slightly different type of person.

I have a friend with a 2013 E350 4matic, loaded with the P2 package, pano roof, the big H/K stereo, etc etc. and while it is a nice car, it doesn't carve corners like my 550 does. But the V6 pulls quite strong on the highway, the stereo sounds quite a bit crisper and cleaner than the logic7 in my E60 and it is vault like on the freeway. Drives very solid and smooth, but it is significantly more numb than the 5 series.

All that said, there is nothing like pulling up to some place in a white sport package E class with tinted windows, LEDs running etc... it screams class and gives you that "I have arrived" feeling.
