May go from 5 series to 3 Series. Thoughts?

I have had my 07 530xi for four years. Bought it CPO four years ago with 30k miles on it and it now has 105k. Been a great car but been thinking of getting something new and different. I bought an 89 911 a year ago and suddenly have a much greater appreciation for smaller, more nimble cars. I thought an F10 535 or 550 would be my next car but now I am thinking of going smaller and sportier to have more fun with the car and also to save a few bucks. The new 5 series feels like a HUGE car, even compared to my E60. 90% of my driving is with no passengers so I don't need a big car. I live in Michigan and this is a year round car as the Porsche is the summer play car. So, AWD is important.

BMW dealer just received a trade on a 2011 335 x drive coupe with M sport package, Nav, and pretty much all the goodies. 25,000 miles. Beautiful saddle brown leather interior. Only downside for me is the space gray color and it has the standard 17" 194M wheels. Just a little bland looking. Part of me finds that appealing as the car would look pretty ordinary to most people and would be a bit of a sleeper and unlikely anyone would mess with it.

If I buy it, almost definitely would get a Dinan stage 2 - already spoke to the dealer about that.

Looking for feedback from anyone here on this particular car and/or anyone who has gone from a 5/6/7 series to a 3 and how the experience has been.

Ha .... I've had a 740il, E60 535i, F10 535i, now a 328i in that order.

The F10 weighs as much as my 740 did but despite all the electronic goodies it just didn't have that satisfying driving experience.

My wife just got a new 2014 F30 328i and I was glad to inherit her 2009 328i. I'm loving it. Solid on the road around town and cruises well on the freeway at 80 mph sustained for 5 hours driving to the beach this weekend.

Should I mention 34.5 mpg cruising at 80 for 310 miles!

Mein Auto: 2013 535
I just sold my E46 yesterday and also have an 2013 F10 535 that I really like (but don't love) for mostly the fact that I like looking at it more than driving it and it's just a tiny bit too big and I am a dummy that didn't think he needed back up cameras, parking distance control, or the "free" 8 speed automatic - for that matter. Granted, the F10 is a gorgeous, luxurious beast but I could get a 335 cpo as well as a SUV or something to fill the gap as a people hauler, which was one of my original requirements in targeting F10 in the first place.

I too noticed some 2011 335's showing up off their 3 year leases recently (as well as some M3 sedans) and have also been considering "downgrading" a bit. I went today to my local dealer who had a couple 20011 335 sports (1 MT, 1 Auto) and really liked them both for different reasons. The MT was really a stripper model with no upgrades besides sport and heated leather seats, had some wear and paint issues (black and pretty scuffed up), etc and I again confirmed the 6 speed gearbox works brilliantly in this car where it really doesn't IMO in the much heavier F10. I then checked out a more loaded 6 speed auto version and actually didn't hate the auto as much as I thought I would and found the shift points completely adequate and perhaps wouldn't be completely miserable if I ended up modding/tracking the car.

Benefits:
335 CPO can be up to $19k cheaper than my current F10's value
E90 is much more nimble and feels so much faster than my F10
180 inches long vs 193 inches long
over 600 lbs lighter
already broken in with wear so not as much reason to be as freaked out about taking my F10 anywhere

Drawbacks:
F10's interior refinement and materials along with its comfort and luxury is downright amazing, E90's interior design is showing its age obviously, so I'd REALLY have to get used to losing these comforts I am getting used to.
F10's exterior looks and style in M-sport form are gorgeous.
F10's chassis is much more comfortable for DD and carrying passengers
neither 335 I looked at today had fold down rears seats or the ski pass so trunk space is going to be tight.

lots to think about.....

IMO, F10 is a luxury car, and Mercedes does luxury better than BMW. If I wanted a car in that class, I'd go W212.

Agreed, 5 and up,...they've become houseboats, sadly I will say. 3 has settled into a nice niche size wise for us mid to large size guys, the 1 would be great but getting in and out would remind me of the clown car at the circus.

Good luck with your purchase, the Dinan S2 will be icing on the cake.

Agreed. The 3 has become what seems like the perfect sized car for a sporty daily driver. I am over 6 feet and the car does not feel small by any means.

You'll be happy with your choice. Went from E46 to '08 535xi which I enjoyed. But I missed the three pedals and coupe feel. My 335 xi with M-sport sounds similar to what you're getting and at 5,000 miles I feel like it's just breaking in. It has exceeded my expectations. BTW, I'm 6' 3".
But, yeah, those rims. 192m's. The advantage is the all-season tires and that has been apparent the last week or so. The disadvantage is, of course, that 18's look better to the discriminating eye. In the end, it's really a first world problem.
Pics when you get it, natch.

I hear you but you get more features for your money w F10. Over the summer when I was trying to buy an E350 finding one with leather and xenons was a pain in the ass. For a 60k luxury car not to have leather and xenons?

I would do it if it were me.

The cars just keep getting bigger so a current 3 series is the size a 5 series was two generations ago.

To me BMW's are sporty euro cars and the bigger the car is the more it takes away from it's sporting demeanor. Might as well buy a merc or something.

Back in the 80's, I had a 3 series. Job provided a 5 series. After going to a different company, I decided the 3 series simply felt better, more agile, better road feel...went back to the 3 series. Never ever wanted another 5 series.

My family of 4 has taken our E93 on weekend road trips before no problem. I literally couldn't find the thing once, buried in the sea of SUVs and minivans that everybody else was driving. Europeans all get by just fine with far smaller cars, so there's no reason people here in the U.S. can't also.
