Service engine soon light emission problems

I bought a 2000 MCoupe new in California Sept 2000 and love it but have a continuing problem that BMW has not successfully fixed. I'd like to know if other CA drivers have had my problem and if so what you've done about it. My warranty just ran out of course!
My problem is that my "service engine soon" light has been coming on for the last two to three years on an irregular basis. It's coming on sometimes seems to relate to how much fuel is in the tank at the time but the 'triggering' amount varies as well over time. Each time I take it in BMV has replaced parts associated with the tank emission control system, but their fix only lasts 1 to 6 months and it comes on again. I just had to smog it last month and this is quite a problem because California now accesses the on board computer which remembers this light being on and doesn't pass the test!
Please let me know if you've seen this as well and have any ideas for a permanent fix!
