Extended warranty comparo

Price is right? I stopped at an area BMW dealer to discuss extended warranty cost estimates.
My CPO on my '08 E93 expires May '14. They offered a one year extension for $1125. Then they offered the Fidelity third party Gold Plus coverage, 2 yrs $1,522, 3 yrs. $1836 and 4 yrs. $2216.
Wadda ya tink?

Always scary going with those 3rd party jobs over 100K. I've read you have to give your next born up and an inspection to prove that you did NOT screw it up from lack of documented maintenance on your end. I wonder how many 15K engine repair jobs they have covered after the deductible?

Does the Fidelity warranty cover the origami top?

(Extended warranties that I have seen have not covered convertible tops -- even the simple, old canvas ones. I think BMW made an exception for it's own warranty plan, but the fine print on most third party extended warranties excludes the convertible top -- and the sunroof.)

I'm not a fan of extended warranties myself. If you have concerns about issues in the future you could always put aside some money each month/payday into savings and let it sit there in case of problems in the future and if you end up not having any before you sell it then you have some for the next car or a possible down payment. I am 51 now and have never had any kind of car repair that has cost as much as any of the prices you were quoted so maybe that is what has turned me off of extended warranties but I will take my chances.

That looks painful!

i had a third party warranty through warranty direct. hassle free. only thing is on a couple occasions they sent an inspector to verify the issue at the dealer, but this was minor since i had a loaner vehicle. The warranty took me to about 96k miles.

Depends on your mileage and car history. If >80k then very possible you will have some repairs, but it's a crap shoot as to when those expenses will hit. The higher the mileage, the more likely the warranty will pay off.
