Take foot off brake.
Press once and engine stops but music still plays.

Or once you exit the vehicle and lock the car the radio turns off.

That's normal. Pushing the button once is like turning the key into ACC/accessory power mode, pushing it again is like turning the key to off. Completely logical.

You can also hold the button for 3 seconds and it will shut everything off.

3 second thing doesn't seem to work, it's easier to just do 2 buttons then.
It'd make more sense to do 1 button shut off, and 3 second to leave it in accessory power mode. 99% of the time we want it off.

(update, read that pressing it down longer would shut off all power)
As you describe it, with your foot on the brake, the second press will restart the engine.

Is there a way to only turn on the radio once the drivers door has been opened? Sometimes the passenger will stay in the car while the driver runs into a store.

There's the kicker - opening the driver's door doesn't turn the radio off, the stupid thing will keep on going, and going, and going......

This "feature" is dumb. Having to lock the car in your home garage just to turn the radio off is silly.

Thanks Bren,

I'm ok with hitting the button twice to turn it off and I will lock it when it is being driven since it will be out of the garage. I just want the passagener to be able to listen to the raido

You don't have to lock your car in your garage to turn off the radio as long as you push the start/stop button twice before getting out. I'm in the habit of doing it now so I don't even think twice about it.

Of course that was hyperbole - but doesn't change the fact that having to push the button more than once to turn the car off is dumb.

in my old 325 with comfort access, i could hold it in for a few seconds and it would shut everything down. i wish the x3 did the same.

I can't argue with that. It is quite stupid, but once I got used to it, I don't think much about it any more. Gotta wonder who's approving this crap when designing it.

I have to be honest, these cars are amazing. The technology and creature comforts are wonderful... Maybe I'm just way out of the league of all of you, but seriously..? Do we have to gripe about every little thing? You guys realize that a lot people would give anything to own a brand new Kia, let alone a brand new BMW...

Sorry, I just feel like a lot of the posts I read are about people complaining about stuff that is SO trivial! Doesn't anyone love their car or am I the only one?

Love, love, LOVE my X3. Not complaining, but acknowledging that certain items could have been designed better especially for a $55,000 vehicle.

Yes, I agree man... For over $50k, I do think that you should get a lot out of a car. But, then again, I'm sure a lot of thought was put into every detail, and if the person that designed or thought up each feature was on this board, I'm sure they would have a more than logical explanation for the reason things were set up a certain way. Anytime someone makes a new product, there will always be some that love the details, and others that want it differently...

You can't please everybody...

Lucky for me, I'm fairly easy to please. Now if only these next two months would fly by so I could go home and enjoy my new X3!

JupiterX3, I agree with you, I know there will be small stuff I won't be thrilled with on my new X3 but I will love it as much as my Z4 that has its quirks. Now if they would get my X3 on a truck and to FL I will be one thrilled owner.

In my 730d closing the drivers door will not shut off the radio but the radio will turns itself off after a preset time and the steering wheel will zero similar to the two button push

Passenger listens to the radio..

If the car is on and radio is on, turn off the ignition (one press of the button). The radio will continue.

If the car is completely off (radio off, too), the passenger can press the radio volum knoba dn the radio will turn on.

The radio times-out after 8 (I think) minutes and you have to hit the volume knob to turn it back on.

This would be easy enough to test but after turning the radio back on will it now stay on indefinitely or will it continue to shut itself down in 8 minute or so cycles?

It will cycle off again automatically--it will never stay on indefinitely if the ignition is off.

I like the double press myself. Occasionally when my wife and I are running errands I will wait in the car and listen to the radio while she runs in to the store quick. It would be stupid if everything shut off with one push and I had to turn the radio back on.

which is what happens to Audi. Once the key is out everything shuts off. Would have to press the power button again on the radio in order to listen

The newer Audi has the best system in my opinion. The radio stays on with one push of start/stop button and the turns off when the driver's door is open.
