Ventilation in 09 5 series

My wife has a 09 5 Series it seems the Air flow is very difficult at times to figure out if we press the snow flake it seems to blow hot air, it comes out of the defrost vent . very strange then if we push the MAX button it turns cold but its on max we turn the fan down to low and its cold. there seems to be no happy medium! Has anyone had this issue?

FWIW, max is for the a/c, the snowflake is defrost. You can adjust the fan speed and air ducts in use manually, but the snowflake gives you max heat, max fan to defrost things as fast as possible.
