Exclamation Had an accident- Please read

Today I was parked at my school, on an incline. I put the car in Park. I went to get out of the car, but it started rolling forward. It hit the Lexus in front of me. Unfortunately, there was a girl in between our cars. She was unhurt, by the grace of God.. She only had bruises... I am 100% sure that the car was in park. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind about that. How did it roll forward that far (8-10 feet)???? WTF happened? Has anyone heard of this before?

The Lexus had a dent in the rear bumper, which was easily repairable. My license plate and bumper/bumper guard were damaged, but not badly at all.

How could there be a girl in between the two cars, yet the two cars still hit each other? Wouldn't she have stopped the car from rolling into the other?

It was off... I ALWAYS turn it on, except when I know my mom is going to be driving the car. She has a nasty habit of taking road trips with the brake on the whole time. I know the car beeps, but... yeah..

The area it was in is a semi-circle. Her dad's car was pointling slightly to the right, and mine was almost straight.. its hard to explain... but the left front of my car hit the rear left of his car, and she was sort of caught in between. I would need a diagram to explain it right.

Yes, I know our Audi does that. I've never tried it with the Bimmer.

Yes, it is the same for USA vehicles. My X5 with automatic transmission will not allow me to remove the key from the ignition unless the vehicle is in Park.

Joel - was your key in our out of the ignition when this occurred?

I'm with Phester here....something doesn't add up here. Whatever, thank God that girl wasn't more seriously hurt. Sorry Joel, not trying to doubt you.

But here's the moral of the story: never ever stand btw two vehicles while they're idling...you never know when the car's gonna surge/move forward. My wife's uncle got his legs amputated below the knees after he was caught between two cars. The driver backed off and sped away and was never caught.

Sorry about the accident and good luck, CJ!

Here... I will try my best to explain... They were parked in such a way that the left front half or so of my car hit the back left half of theirs. The corner or my car hit theirs, mostly the bumper guard. The license plate seems to have cushioned her leg. I dunno, its hard to explain! If i could draw a diagram and post it as a pic I could probably show you guys, but I haven't the foggiest idea how to do that.

If you can't then I'm betting that you only THINK you put it into park but in actuality you didn't. Were you distracted by something when this occurred? It sounds like you might have been, since you got out of the vehicle with the key still in the ignition.

Hey, CJ:

I'm glad that no-one was seriously injured.

Be sure to notify your insurance company ASAP, if you haven't already done so.

If I were you, I'd be very careful about what I said on a public forum re: the facts of the accident. I certainly would not be posting any pictures or diagrams. That stuff is all discoverable, and might come back to bite you. 'Ya never know. Just a bit of friendly unsolicited advice.

GL, CJ.

Ken

The key still only comes out in park. The car was in park, but the car was running. I always leave it running, because I drive it to school and my mom drives it home. I wasn't distracted by anything. I remember it clearly. I said goodbye to my mom, and I CLEARLY remember putting the car in park because I took my coffee out of the cupholder right afterwards. Also, after the car hit, I remember pulling the shifter towards me to put it in reverse... I remember this as clear as day. I have a friend who didnt put the car in park, and it rolled into him and left him paralyzed, because it broke his legs, pelvis, and back. After that happened, I NEVER leave the car without putting it in park and putting on the brake. I only didn't do the brake this once because of my mom's reputation with them.

We have already talked to the insurance and everything. The damage to the Lexus was tiny, just a dent in the bumper. The girl was an aquaintance of mine, and I knew her parents. They are from Britain, and they assured my mom that they are not the kind of people who "go around suing people." They said they would press no charges, because it is obviously an accident, and everyone was ok. They are very nice people. But, you are an attorney, so I will take your advice, V..

It seems that being around a car in NH is a bad idea.

Sorry to have read what happened. The X must have been on sneak mode. To roll 8-10 feet, hit another vehicle with a girl in between that suffered minimal damage must have rolled very slowly yet she didn’t notice it creeping up on her.

I haven’t read all of the responses but sounds to me like it was turned off and thrown in reverse rather than park. All in all, glad nothing to serious happened.

OK I went out and had a good look at the car and here is the damage report:
Snapped Tulley plate frame
Bent license plate
Cracked license plate holder.
3 Good-sized scratches on the painted part of the bumper
Several scratches on the plastic part of the bumper.
Scratched bumper bar
Broken PDC sensor.

It could have been much, much worse. I'm glad it was small damage to my bumper, rather than irrepairable damage to her leg(s)...
