E28 535iA 06/87 build date, M30B34?

Hello All, I am purchasing my first BMW next week, which will be a '92 E34 535i 5 speed, and I am hoping to go turbo sometime in the future. My local pick-a-part JY has an E28 535i which says it's an '88 but which has an 06/87 build date. I am wondering if the motor in it is an M30B34 or B35? I hear that the B34s are better for boost with their lower stock compression.

The motor looks like it has been a bit open to the elements at the water pump and valve cover, but the ODO (which I know can't be trusted) says that it is at 180k. How would I test if the motor is good?

It's tempting because parts at the JY are half price until tomorrow.

The only way to know if it's good is to get it running.

Re: E28 535iA 06/87 build date, M30B34?

Right, I was just there again looking at it and called Todd at TCD. Both he and Wikepedia verified that all E28 535i M30s were B34s. I think I got them mixed up with the E24s for '88-'89 which had the M30B35 engine.

It would be ideal if I could turn it over to see if there was any binding or not, but I probably won't get it anyway. With the half off price deal going on through tomorrow (1/1/14) at $238 out the door and it being my birthday it would be nice to get a working B34 to build for bullitproof boost (Like Good & Tight!), but Todd said that boosting the M30B35 in '92 E34 would be fine.

I just wonder if streetable and reliable HP and TQ numbers around 450 are doable with a 9.0:1 comp ratio vs. the 8.0:1 of the B34 without detonation. I guess it's all in the tuning. Btw, the engine in my car has only 82k babied miles, so it should be a good candidate.

I will post pics after I go pick it up in MD next weekend. So excited! Nice B-day gift, ya think? :-)
