Exhaust venting problem

hello, my 2007 3series has a serious problem with exhaust that is venting thru the main air cont/heater vent above the radio. this problem has gotten steadly worse over the last few months. it only does this a minute or so after start up and once i am on my way the problem usually will stop. But once i stop the motor and restart , a small amount of exhaust fumes will again vent thru the main opening above the radio. Any help will really be appreciated.

I gotta tell ya, as useful as I have found this forum to be, "exhaust gas coming into the car through the vents" is one of those things I'd be all over a mechanic for in lieu of internet advice, and I don't think I'd wait a few months before doing so.
