Mein Auto: 2008 BMW 328xi
Searched and still need some help/advice.

I am new to the forums and need some help! I currently own a 2008 BMW 328xi with 108000 miles on it. I took it into today for an oil change and to have it checked because the coolant light had come on and the battery was sounding weak.

My service advisor contacted me and said that my battery failed and needs replaced. He also said that my rear shock absorbers need replaced as well as recommended replacing my oil gasket pan and resealing oil filter housing...

I have attached a screenshot of the things that need done and the quoted prices. Are they trying to rape me with these prices? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can't speak as to whether your car needs this work or not, but these prices are way too high for the work involved.

Most people find a trusted independent shop to work on their cars instead of taking it to the dealer after the warranty runs out. Their prices are much lower for the work than the dealer and if you get the right shop you can trust that the work actually needs to be done.

If I were you, I would look at the regional section of Bimmerfest and see if you can find a recommended shop in the Harrisburg area. Perhaps some members on the board who live in that area can make a recommendation as well.

I think my initial frustration/sticker shock is diminishing! I contacted 2 local BMW independent shops and am waiting for quotes on getting this work done. With my car being out of warranty, I need to find a good BMW mechanic and stop taking it to the dealer. Lesson Learned!!

Yeah, the dealer prices are too high, and you need to find a BMW independent.
  1. Shock absorbers: You can go 4 stock for much less than that. For $675, you can get Koni FSD shocks (much better than stock) for all 4 corners, then add a few hundred to have them installed.
  2. Alignment: If you change the shocks, you'll need an alignment. The price quoted is not grossly out of line.
  3. Way too much for the battery. Figure half that installed, then perhaps $50 to have the new battery registered with the car computer. Have it load tested before just replacing it due to age.
  4. Much less than that for the leaking gaskets. Take the freebee valve cover change, and look elsewhere for the others.

I found you can negotiate the prices at bmw. If thats where you want it done. Tell them to break out the labor rates ,time for each job and parts. If anything you made them work for it

If you want to make a trip out to Philly, Helix can take care of this work for you. They do routine maintenance on Minis/BMWs as well as performance upgrades
