I don't think anyone knows what file structure or formatting the original hard drive is.
If you can figure that out, I don't see why you can't clone the original.
I would try upgrading to a SSD. Why BMW didn't implement this in the first place is kinda dumb. A mechanical drive in an auto environment that is constantly exposed to vibration just doesn't make any sense to me. Of course cost was the factor, but c'mon.
