Ah, this ding hurts.

My car got scraped while parked in the lot here at work this morning. A car pulling into the space in front of me dragged its door along my right front bumper, leaving a 12" x 6" path of scratches and scuffs (but no distortion of the bumper skin itself).

Upside: The person who did it owned up and told me.

Downside: She's our lead architectural designer and also my goddaughter. Tapping her for the repair cost is going to be no fun on so many levels.

Update: Hey, I've got a clear bra on the nose. If all the damage is confined to the plastic, she may get off easy !

Sounds like a developing story!!!

Hope it'll be a cheap fix. I got a quote for respraying a bumper before from the BMW body shop and it was close to $2,000...

Good grief. I truly empathize.
Hope the repair is painless and not too expensive. Are the scratches deep?

I was in your area last week visiting friends in Norton. Too damn cold!

Oh, no problem for me. She's going to pay for it, but likely not through insurance. At least here in MA, anything under $2K is better off paid outright - the increase in her premiums for the next 5 years will likely exceed the outlay. My insurance won't change - I know who did it, so the companies will tap her for all the fee hits if I claim it.

Not too deep. I think they're all in the clear bra, which would make it a cheap and quick repair (pull the plastic and have it replaced for $150 or so).

I'll know better this weekend. It's supposed to get out of the single digits and into the 50s, so I can wash the salt and out grit out to be able to take a closer look. It has been a bit cold to clean it out and get a good look since yesterday.

Almost every body shop I went to in the area had similar pricing. There is a difference between respraying and doing it right.

- Removal
- Sanding
- Base coat
- Paint
- Clear coat
- Re-mount

I think it came out something like 12-15 hours of work.

Given that the bumper is the place where you take the most damage, I had a mobile paint guy respray the bumper satisfactorily for $450. About 2 months later I hit a piece of wood on the highway at about 75 mph that put a pretty nice scrape at the bottom of the bumper. Can hardly see it but when I wash it I can feel it. Told myself I was glad I hadn't paid $2,000 to get the bumper redone.

It literally is almost cheaper buying a completely new bumper and having it sprayed and mounted than to re-spray an existing one.

If it needs a respray, bring it to Gallery Autobody in Norwood. They did a full replace of my rear bumper on my E93 for about $1k and they repaired the bumper on my EOS w/ full respray for well under $1K. High quality work. You'll never be able to tell there was anything done.

Dont get fooled because of the nameplate on your car!...2000 is outrageous for a respray on a bumper cover...new bumper cover is 500.00. you dont need one of those. prep, prime, spray with flex agent in the paint should be no more that 600.00-700.00....thats with taking the bumper off to do it....

2000.00!...still laughing.....

seriously...if the paint is not scraped off the bumper, and you cannot see any layers of ripped paint or the base plastic material you may be pleasantly surprised!....Im hopeful its more in the 150.00 range for a new clear bumper shield.

I had a woman hit me in the parking lot with her bumper.....no visible scratches, just a few scuffs...the body shop up the road buffed them out and now it looks better than before....guess I need a detailing...
