BMW i3 and i8 at NAIAS detroit

2014 BMW i3 Electric Vehicle

BMW i3 at Detroit Auto Show 2014

The BMW i3 is the first fully electric vehicle from BMW Group under BMW i's growing lineup of visionary concept vehicles constructed from the ground up primarily from lightweight carbon fiber. With a hybrid-synchronous electric motor delivering 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, the BMW i3 is electrified by a 22-kWh lithium-ion battery good for 80-100 miles of emission-free driving. The BMW i3 will offer interior space comparable to the legendary BMW 3 Series on a shorter overall body. Its low 32.3-foot turning circle and a relatively long wheelbase make it agile and engaging to drive, ideally suited to driving in dense urban areas. As perhaps the most sustainably-manufactured passenger car in the world, the story of the i3's production process is equally compelling. Available in 2014 Q2, the BMW i3 will have a base MSRP of $41,350 and the range-extender model will have a starting MSRP of $45,200 (excludes Destination & Handling fee).

The BMW i8 is the first plug-in hybrid 2+2 sports car from BMW Group. It will join BMW i's growing lineup of visionary vehicles which are purpose built from the ground up as electric and hybrid electric and constructed primarily from lightweight carbon fiber through sustainable processes. Coming to the market in 2014 Q2 and priced at $135,700 (excludes Destination & Handling fee), the BMW i8 features an award-winning design with sleek, low slung looks and operates with extremely low fuel consumption (est. up to 94 mpg) and emissions output. It is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds on the way to an electronically-governed top speed of 155 mph.

Autoline interviewed the CEO of BMW North America. Said the i3 will begin hitting showrooms in April, followed "a few months later, summer" for the i8, and let slip an 82mpg number, which seems closer to the actual number than the pie-in-the-sky 100+ rating it got on the European cycle.

Leasing the i3

from InsideEVs:

BMW is offering financing to well qualified individuals for 'up to' 60 months from 2.99%, 61-66 months from 3.49%, 67-72 months from 4.99%, 73-84 months from 5.99%.

As for residual values on leases, they seem to be a touch lower than industry norms, but not too far off. Both the fully electric version and the REx (i3 with optional range extender) are given the same residual values. (based on 15,000 miles/year)

24 month residual 49%
30 month residual 44%
36 month residual 39%
42 month residual 34%
48 month residual 28%
54 month residual 25%
60 month residual 21%
Note: add 2% for 12,000 mile/year leases, 3% for 10,000 mile/year leases. Extra mileage is charged at 20 cents per mile.

and residuals:
BMW's MF on a 36month/top tier is .000125, .00169 on 49-60 months, all the way to .00399 (/wave to 600s) on a 36, .00499 on a 49+

Those numbers use an imperial gallon. 1 imperial gallon = 1.2 US gallons. Even after correcting for US gallons the EU drive cycle ratings are unrealistic for all cars.
