Window Tinting

I am pretty sure I am going to tint my windows and I am looking for any feedback and pictures from those of you that have done it. I am going to go the Ceramic route, which I have read does not interfere with the electronics. In CA we can legally tint 30% in the front and have no limit on the rear windows. So here is my question, should I keep the tint to 30% all the way around or go darker in the rear. For those that have gone darker on the rear windows, do you have any visibility issues at night? TIA

get pinnacle 1 which is the one of the best tint there is. its same price as other ceramic. Dont go for 30% all around, its too light. I had it first on my car, it felt like there was no tint, so i did 15% all around 5% in the back windshield and 45% in the front windshield. I dont necessarily have visibility issues, you get used to it after 2 days. I would suggest 30 in the front, 20 in the back for you should look good. at the same time it wont look that uneven.

This is how it used to look with 30% all around ceramic.

This is how it looks now 15% all around, 5 in the back windshield and 45% in the front windshield.

Thanks for the info and the pictures, I like the look now, sadly I can't go that dark. The place I am going has both the ceramic and pinnacle. My wife is not sold on the tinting, so it looks like I have some convincing to do!

I went 35% all around, 3M. New York Law is that number and they actually do check with a guage at stops. It is a bit lighter than I would like but looks sharp and definitely takes the edge off. Really does keep a fair amount of heat out even with the lighter shade.

Pinnacle is the way to go, I had ceramic before. I had Suntek Carbon before, it creates a haziness due to the carbon composition. I dint notice it on the side windows at first, but when i got the front windshield done, the whole dashboard was mirrored on the windshield. It was so annoying to drive with what looked like permanent fog on the windshield. I got it removed 2 days later and got pinnacle, and what a difference it was! Now i will never go back to normal carbon tints which are similar to ceramic i believe.

SLS, here is mine with 40% front and 22% rear. I tried to post right under Richard's pic so that you can see the subtle differences. My wife ALSO does not like dark tint, but she is fine with these percentages. And I'm not sure that we are legally allowed to tint the front windows at all (unless its clear and for UV protection...per CHP.CA.GOV) but some people do it anyway.

That is a really nice look, thanks for posting that. I would show my wife but she already thinks I am on too many forums!

That looks great as well. According the tint shop's website "California window tinting law, your front driver and passenger door windows must have a minimum of 70% visible light transmission (VLT) with or without film" So it would appear that you are just slightly over the legal limit.

I probably should have waited to bring this up and just went ahead and done it. She already is complaining about all the options I am talking about getting for this car. I could have done the BMS Tune, Pedal Box and Spacers all without her knowing, but I went and opened my Yap! Oh well, I'll just take it slow! Thanks for the pictures.

The light tint looks good, should be ok with CA CHP, unless your on the phone, tags expired and speeding, lol. Here in Socal there's more desert than Norcal so they usually leave you alone in those areas. There is what's called a medical condition card if you have problems with brightness/intensity of the sun and can get a waiver, then you can go as dark as you want, but those are hard to come by, at least from what I've heard.

Just so you're aware, California law does not allow window tinting on the front windows, anything darker than clear front windows is a great reason to get stopped. While most cops refuse to cite for it, since they have front windows tinted themselves, it is a great reason to stop you and figure out who you are and what your doing.

CVC- 26708. (a) (1) A person shall not drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows.

blah blah blah- then this section comes along for "clear, colorless and transparent material on the front windows"

(d) Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

(2) The window glazing with the material applied meets all requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 205 (49 C.F.R. 571.205), including the specified minimum light transmittance of 70 percent and the abrasion resistance of AS-14 glazing, as specified in that federal standard.

(3) The material is designed and manufactured to enhance the ability of the existing window glass to block the sun's harmful ultraviolet A rays.

(4) The driver has in his or her possession, or within the vehicle, a certificate signed by the installing company certifying that the windows with the material installed meet the requirements of this subdivision and the certificate identifies the installing company and the material's manufacturer by full name and street address, or, if the material was installed by the vehicle owner, a certificate signed by the material's manufacturer certifying that the windows with the material installed according to manufacturer's instructions meet the requirements of this subdivision and the certificate identifies the material's manufacturer by full name and street address.

(5) If the material described in this subdivision tears or bubbles, or is otherwise worn to prohibit clear vision, it shall be removed or replaced.

#2 is what they have on their website, 30% tint allows 70% light transmittance...Right? or am I misunderstanding this?

Be careful how dark you go on the side driver window. I did my Audi in a pretty dark tint and almost ran over people on 2 different occasions because I couldn't see them at night. Really. Wife had to scream at me to stop.

The way it's written is only allowing, "clear, colorless, & transparent", I'm not sure what all of the percentages are for, could have something to do with allowing manufacturers to use UV glass in the front windows...

I drive a lot and CHP's in Cali can see tint from miles away, probably easiest ticket to get, but I'd say drivers in smaller 1 or 3 series lol may stand out more.

Screw California's ridiculous laws. They'd force you to wipe your ass a certain way if they could figure out a way to monitor. I run 20% all around in LA and haven't been hassled. I just put it down when I see the heat

+1, I was just making sure OP was aware since some posts weren't quoting the law correctly... most cops don't give a sh*t anyways, just good to know...

In CA, there is no medical exemption for front tinting of the windows. There are some rare exceptions like you have to have removable screens on the front and such, but who does that?
