Its value is whatever someone is willing to pay, so it may seem overpriced to you, but a bargain to someone else. If you are really interested, drive it and evaluate its true condition. E28's are getting rarer all the time and nice ones are very hard to find.

Mein Auto: Looking for a new ride
Same issue I'm having

Hi I have the same issue myself. I'm looking to buy my first beemer, specifically looking at cars from the early to mid 80's era. I have to say it's hard to judge what these are worth I've been looking up values on Nada and Hagerty (which is actually lacking when in comes to this era.) In any case I find it hard to believe that some of the cars I've seen are worth anywhere close to the asking prices and especially the prices suggested by the valuation sites. Don't get me wrong I know I should expect to spend money on repairs and maintenance after the purchase, but it seems like many people wait until they've maxed out the usable life of the tranny or last engine rebuild before they decide to sell. Also, as can be expected it seems that many of the cars I've come across where someones wanna be race toy at some point. Meaning they've driven the car to it's limits on a consistent basis. Again, something I'm not surprised about but if a car is subject to a certain amount of abuse and the resulting level of wear and tear then I can't possibly see how it could be worth top dollar. Especially when it means I'll be dropping a few more grand to get things sorted out, that being the case I expect the price to drop significantly. This would be in contrast to buying something that was gently used as just cruiser or daily driver, in that sort of case I can see paying a little more to buy the car since I would expect fewer repairs to me needed.
