2008 328i Battery Light

Yesterday evening I parked my car, turned the engine off but continue to charge my phone via car charger. 20-30 min later, the battery warning light appeared. I have been able to start, drive the vehicle without issues nor battery light warning.

Is this just a warning indicator since the engine was off but battery used continued?

Thanks!

Yupp, you're right about at the mark for a battery replacement. They typically last about 4-5 years in these cars.

Now, can I replace the battery myself without resetting the system, as there are multiple posts that state it is required while others contradict it?

The battery needs to be registered to the car.

Registration does the following:
1. Tells the car there is a new battery
2. Logs mileage
3. Resets charging algorithms
4. Stores a reference value around 80% capacity

You can install the battery, then take it somewhere to be registered.

Keep the same specs as your current one, Ah and CCA, and type, AGM or non-AGM. If you change Ah or battery type, you need to have the car programmed, then registered.
