E82 / E88 1 Series (2008 - 2013)
BMWs throw back to the iconic 2002, with a renewed form and function. The smallest car in BMW's line up but still packs a punch. Available in coupe or convertible, powered by either an inline 6 in the 128 or the twin turbo rocket sled 135.

Looking for advice on buying my first BMW

Hi guys,

Looking to buy my first BMW (Looking at a 2011 135i) pretty soon. (within the next couple weeks) This is most likely going to be a low mileage car. (5-7k miles a year)

Been looking at one from a independent dealership that only sells auctioned leased cars. The dealership has a decent reputation but still got a few negative reviews on problems not being told before they bought the car and etc.

The car: (I'm just copy and pasting and editing, sorry for caps)

PREMIUM PKG
DOUBLE CLUTCH AUTOMATIC
COMFORT ACCESS
ADPATIVE XENON LIGHTS
HARMON KARDON SOUND

LEATHER SPORT SEATS BLACK WITH RED COMBO
BMW WARRANTY & MAINTENANCE
CLEAN CARFAX ONE OWNER

Went in for a test drive last week and it drives great. But the car has been sitting in the lot for a LONG time. They got it back in like november/december and not much interest has been shown in the car so it hasn't even been started for a while (so I suspect the engine tubing/belts are degraded for a good bit since the weather in seattle lol) Hell. The car didn't even start initially. The engine had to crank for like 5-10 seconds before it started. There's rust spots on the rotors (but the brakes didn't feel anything out of the ordinary)

The carfax is clean (but not that accurate at times so definitely doing a PPI) and shows that it's from California so maybe a little of the sea salt that might have caused some corrosion on the car.

Basically planning on walking in and paying with cash. I would ask them if it's ok to take it for a pre-purchase inspection, set-up a appointment for a pre-purchase inspection at a local BMW shop, and then go in talking about pricing for purchase that day.

I looked online for problems and pretty much the only problems I can find is engine/seatbelt rattle, the HPFP (since they apparently didn't change it much from the N54 HPFP and that's basically been recalled/warranty extended)

I was looking at their warranty and it's not too bad. it's around $2600 for 5 years/50k miles and covers everything except the "high tech" which I assume is basically the navigation and radio and stuff. (And $3300 for the "platinum" package which covers everything and rental cars when it's in the shop)

I am gonna offer $25,500-26,000 cash straight up (+ tax) for the car if the PPI came back semi-clean. (around $500-700 of repairs within the next year or two not covered under warranty if not, then i'll make it $25,000 + the warranty)

Any recommendations would be nice. Thanks for reading.

Nice looking car! Don't worry about corrosion on the rotors, it happens after sitting for a day or so. I would definitely get the PPI done, just to make sure there isn't anything obvious. Is the warranty you mentioned offered fem the dealer, or is it the BMW extended one?

If you get the PPI done at a BMW service center, ask them to pull the service history for you. If not, ask around here or join your local BMW CCA chapter. There are people that can pull this info for you.

Here is a good site where you can get the VIN decoded:

The price you are offering seems about right to me. Good luck!

The price offered was from the independent dealership. Don't know what company the warranty is with.

I'm calling the local BMW dealership today and asking if they do the PPI and how much their warranty is/what their coverage is.

Edit: Just called. The BMW service is $2955 for 3 year/50,000 miles. I'm going to ask the dealership what would the procedure is and how to get reimbursed when problems do come up.

I was looking at the configuration website. It lists the car as having the M-sport package but it doesn't list M Sport Suspension like some of the other M sport equipped cars. I thought the M sport package came with M-sport suspensions?

Edit: my bad. the website posted the m sport suspension in a different spot than older models. <2010 models had the sports suspension up in standard equipment while 2011< has the M sport suspension in the optional equipment.

Well, you are talking about spending $28 K (when you add your investment in maintenance) for a used car with over 40K miles on it. I bet there is also some maintenance necessary which should be factored in. Getting an evaluation from a BMW dealership is a smart move! I bought a 2011 128i in 2011 that had 10K miles on it. It was the sport model with everything you suggest except the M package and of course its a 128, not a 135. I paid $26K and the dealer was definitely not giving me a deal... so paying $26K for a car two years later and with 30K more mileage and with warranty running out seems a little too high - even with the better options and the turbo engine. I'd get other opinions on the price, just to get a better feel.
