E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki

Window washers

Can anyone give me a link to see a plan on how these are set up.i have a 2002 e39 5401
My washers have stopped working and it looks like a pump is broken

Check under 'Vehicle electrical system'. This is the link for my car. It should be the same for yours.

I also had a problem with the washers. Low pressure and leak - was getting the low fluid error soon after toping it up.
Turned out it was a leak from the hoses.

can you hear it

Turn the key on and press the pump lever to see if you can hear it.
When I did this, I noticed a split hose.
