^+1

Here is a pic of the frayed wires that can cause the message:

This connector is located at the bottom of the radiator on the driver's side.

Agree with above posts. Both wires and sensor itself can fail after 15+ years. I had to replace sensors in my 95 E34 and 97 E36. It is easy repair if done when you are changing coolant. You should change the coolant at least every couple years. I do mine every 12 months.

I have a quick question on coolant level . . .

Hi, I have a manual e34 520i M50 and have recently been doing many checks on the cooling system after an 'episode' of sudden coolant loss, I think I have found the cause now, when the engine is running I have noticed that the water pump pulley seems to move in and out slightly :-/ but while checking other things I thought . . . hmm how come I got no indication of 'Low Coolant Level' ! ? and I am wondering if its only the automatic models that have the level sensor in the radiator reservoir ? have looked in my Owners Manual and I cannot seem to find a warning light/indication for low coolant level. so do I have an aftermarket radiator ? or do some models (maybe manual versions) not have the Low Coolant Level warning ?

Any advice would be appreciated as I cannot seem to find an answer to this anywhere

If you had a low level it would say it on the dash
COOLANT LEVEL
is what you would see followed by OWNERS MANUAL
Press the check control button to scroll through any messages.
It is the right button on the dash.

I did have low coolant level because there was no water in the radiator reservoir, but I had no warning, I have no 'check control button' Owners Manual shows 2 instrument clusters, mine is the one without the check control display
