Thinking of removing my WORKING a/c system. Anyone wanna talk me out of it? l

Hey guys lol...

Its me, the crazy MF...

Im getting ready to take my e34 of the street and make it an official toy soon..
Been thinking about what this means, what rules i may ignore now and any doors it may open..

I've been wanting a significant jump in power to wieght, mostly the diet..
CF hood /trunk is very hard to get and expensive..

Mostly thinking of removing my fully functional A/C system.. This is a difficult choice for me.
I wish it where broken so i could have no guilt!

Anyone done it on there e34? Was it worth it?

I figure in a car i only drive as a toy at tracks e i wont miss it, and actually i never do use it..

But i like knowing its there, it ads value to the car, and i jumped hurtles to keep it intact when i did the motor swap.. I just dont know.

And i know this is probably a dumb question here. Any one here of any one ever replacing windows with lighter plastic, but keeping the regulators?

Why not just have light electric windows lol.. Fun idea at least

if you aren't using it, I say get rid of it. Im sure you can find people on here who would love to get their hands on some pieces. How far are you reducing weight? i.e. removal of seats, carpet, etc...

I planned to keep most of the interior as i swapped it all to make it nice..

I already have lighter bucket seats.. I considered tearing EVERYTHING out but in a car that wont see door to door racing or a cage likey is a waist.. I doubt there really is even 100 pounds to be saved from the interior left if i fully gutted it..

Anyone wanna bid on a full functional a/c system lol?

Here is a list of most of my diet so far.

I live in Florida and my A/C is broken. I miss it, but not enough to shell out the money to fix it. I can just open the sunroof and it's alright. Before I know it, the summer is over.

Imae,

I'm going to tell you what to do about your car here. I'm going to use math, if you don't mind.

The M50 525 auto's engine and tranny come in at 563 lbs. The 540i manual's engine and tranny come in at 441 lbs.

Though the M60 is heavier, its manual tranny is lighter than the 525's autobox. The difference works itself out as above.

The 540i's big case rear diff is about 12 lbs heavier than the 525's medium case diff.

All of these figures are from www.bmsfans.info . This website is better than realoem.com for several reasons, one of which is that it lists actual weights of parts and sub components where displayed. The format is virtually the same as realoem apart from that so you'll be able to use it easily.

The 525's weight is about 1.7 metric tons, or 3740lbs. Your 540 should come in at 3632 lbs.

You are wondering if reducing weight will improve your track performance.

You will need to remove 36 lbs to reduce your weight by 1%.

The car's entire ac system cannot exceed 36 lbs and will probably be significantly lower than that. And removing it is not going to alter the front-rear weight distribution beyond what a decent driver can compensate for and internalise within 60 seconds on the road.

At your level of performance, a 1% drop translates to negligible real improvement. Driving skill is still far more important. So why would you want go to the time time time and trouble to gut a perfectly good usable system, when you don't absolutely need to make space for anything else and when it will make zero difference to your performance ?

You will probably end up breaking something else along the way.

--------

This is so glaringly obvious that even MSD did not reply. I found myself in a sympathetic mood due to the absurdistan traffic rules you are chafing under, hence this post.
