'13 750i High Pitched Sound at 1200 RPMs

We were on way home tonight and I noticed a high pitched sound. My wife and I were talking, so I turned off the stereo and it seemed to go away. Then it came back. Loudest at 1200 RPMs. Above 1200 RPM it seems to fade away, or other noise is drowning it out.

When the car comes to a stop, it goes away after a second or two. Tried turning vents on / off - that made no difference. The whine is not linear with the RPMs, though it does get loudest at 1200 RPMs. It's not like a ground hum from the audio system. It definitely seems mechanical. The Mrs. heard the noise as well.

I did some searches and didn't find any exact matches, but I did find a video with the exact same sound -

The high pitched noise cuts in and out during video. It's not a constant (that would be too easy). None of threads I found pinpointed an exact cause. The all had the same theme though, "dealer heard the sound, but didn't know what it was..."

This noise happened several weeks ago and I was hoping it was a one-time thing or maybe I was imagining things. Has anybody else had a similar problem? Hoping to point the dealer in the correct direction.

I have the same sound, it almost sounds like it's an issue with a speaker to me (both my wife and I have commented on it in the past and it sounded like it was coming from the front right speaker)?

Rather than simply shutting your vents... have you tried completely turn off the air conditioning and fans...

I have had a similar issue on my E65... it doesnt happen everyday so I am not if it is the same... but it seems to be either something loose within the a/c system and its either vibrating or a/c blowing on a loose piece or a combination of both... I never figured out what it was... I solved the problem by buying a new F02... LOL

But... if you think about it... vibration does make sense... as it is only audible at certain RPM... so whatever is loose on your car probably only resonates at around 1200rpm since the vibration frequency is different at different RPMs and loads...

Weird, haven't had that on either my '12 or '13. Do the ole' try another dealer and ask for a ride along with a master tech if you get no results.

Best of luck!

I have that exact same high pitched whine in my car on occasion. I have reported it the dealer on my last 2 service visits, and I got the totally predictable "couldn't duplicate" response. I took iPhone video several different times and showed it to them, and they said they have to actually hear it in real time to do anything about it. It's very frustrating - mine seems to happen most often after I've been driving, park somewhere for 20-30 minutes, then start driving again - usually around 1500 RPMs and up to about 40 mph. I've stopped before to try to pop the hood and run around to the front to see if I can pinpoint a location, but it usually goes away after a second when fully stopped.

I have tried all the things above - AC off, vents closed, radio off, etc. - it is definitely coming from under the hood somewhere and piping into the cabin.

Anybody know if this is the oil pump whine I've read about? Ticks me off that I have to waste time trying to chase this down.

I have several videos I can post if you need corroborating evidence.

+1

I haven't experienced it in my '13 either.

@Jackson, I had a "whistle" in my E66 that ceased once I turned the A/C off. It was very sporadic & annoying. Like you, I corrected it with an F02.

Have it as well.

It's not the oil pump (was replaced), it's not specific to the n63 engine (still have it with n63TU), it's not the AC/ventilation/heater (still there with all of that shut down), it's not the speakers (there with music off).

It's mildly annoying but you kinda get used to it I guess. Like the popping/clicking sound from the steering column...
Flagship quality FTW !

'13 750i High Pitched Sound at 1200 RPMs

Hmmmm... Now we have a mystery, mine started around 18k, and it's annoying when it happens. I first thought it was tinnitus and when my wife heard it I knew it wasn't just me

It is annoying, although I find by the time I'm recognizing it, it goes away a few seconds later?

That video posted is an EXACT replication of the noise though... My car does sound like it's coming from the front right (which is why I thought it was a speaker issue).

I'd be curious if all of us have the same options (740li sport, B&O, executive package, LED), and could find a reason behind it?

Could the noise be coming from the turbo spooling?

It happens with zero boost - usually at lower speeds <40 mph and around 1200-1500 RPM.

Strange... it sounded like a sound I had in my M5... Are you coasting when it happens?

Usually under mid throttle - once it is whining, it will continue when I get off the gas pedal until I come to a complete stop, then it goes away. It was doing it a lot tonight so I had my wife drive while I sat in the passenger seat and I can't for the life of me figure out where it is coming from. It sounds like somewhere in front of the dash towards the passenger side, but I don't think you can hear it from outside the vehicle. Tried putting it in neutral and revving the engine - nothing. Tried power braking in drive - nothing. Pull away nice and easy from a stop sign - whine.

When I was googling this, 5-series owners (528's) were reporting it too. I believe the car in the video was a 2011 528i. Here's the original post:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=455691

Regarding one poster's question - yes, it can be heard when the cabin fan is turned off. To me it sounds like a high pressure valve release - sort of like a boiling tea kettle sound, but not as loud.

From reading other people's posts on various forums, the suspects were -

1) Leak in the air intake, but that was a 2001 car
2) Engine vent pipe clogged
3) Power steering unit (I doubt this because happens when the car is going straight or not)
4) Alternator (I'm assuming it would be the bearings, which would be heard outside the car as well. So if the sound is only heard inside the cabin, then maybe not the alternator...)
5) Small pebble stuck between the brake bad & rotor (person had this happen occasionally when they went down dirt roads)

The other stuff I found on the web read alot like this thread - people have heard, dealer has heard it, nobody found the source. Intermittent. Both times it happened to me was while driving slow, around 30 MPH. It could be happening at higher speeds and I'm not hearing due to wind noise / road noise. It happens if the car is neutral and the pitch reaches its peak at ~1200 RPMs. My car ~6500 miles on it.

I had a similar sound in my M5, and they "BMW" determined it was an issue with the drivetrain .... never found out what because I traded the car in before it was fixed.... In my case the sound initially sounded like it was coming from the NAV area, however when I had someone sit in the back seat, they determined it was coming from the back axel and the sound was bounding off the front windshield....

Anyone have any resolution on this? It's happening with more frequency for me now and is starting to get annoying!

It is the crankcase vent valves. They are compromised in some way and the vacuum pressure is causing air to get through the seal and make that whistle. I have been battling the same issue and finally was able to get it to happen with the shop foreman at the dealership in the car with me. The easy test is to see if your oil filler cap is difficult to get off when the noise is occurring. I found a few videos of guys identifying the problem after googling BMW crankcase vent valve whistle.

On our cars now the vent valves are integrated into the valve cover so the entire part needs to be replaced. It took 2 weeks for my dealer to get it all done but it seems to have fixed it, although I could swear I've heard it very faint a few times since the fix. Could be me just obsessing about it now.

I'll see if I can get you some part numbers from my invoice - just have to find my folder.

Here's the tech commentary and parts info:

Cause: bank 1 and bank 2 crankcase vent valves - internal control valve deform

11-15-7-646-086 connecting line:111060
11-15-7-575-640 vent pipe:111066
11-15-7-646-087 connecting line: 111060
11-15-7-575-641 vent pipe:111066

Remove and install bank 1 and 2 = intake air box - harness
Install bank 1 and 2 vent valves and oil return lines

Good luck - hope this helps

Took my car in today for this, let's see if they can "replicate" it... The SA seemed to not care about my pre-diagnosis!

What? They usually love when we play doctor. Tell you know Raj, that should get you nowhere.
