Lack of power

Recently bought 90 BMW 525i with 277,000 miles that appears to have been well taken care of. I must admit I never really jumped on it until recently. The best way I can describe the power is a lack of power, no miss though. On a stretch of freeway, I did from a standing stop floor the accelerator and noticed it shifted at 4500, not redline and took a while to reach cruising speed. Also, the idle is starting a searching or fluctuation of a couple hundred rpm's. From what I have read here there are many avenues to pursue and have gotten confused. My mechanic smells raw fuel, I have not. Shall I start with battery, alternator, 02 sensor, plugs, cap, rotor, AFM (no idea what that is), temp sensor; or is there a common issue with these? Seafoam first?

Thanks for your reply

The light has only come on for a second or so, did the stomp test, but no codes are stored.

Change the fuel filter. My 1995 525i had a 1997 date coded fuel filter that shop air pressure could barely blow through. This should be done first, as it is a basic function that many systems depend on to run properly. While under there, check for a fuel leak from some of the hoses...

A note on the stomp test.
Even if no codes are stored you will get the light flashing in a sequence telling you exactly that, does it flash in the sequence?
Also many people have the misconception that the OBC will tell the code onscreen, that is not how it happens. The Check Engine Light itself flashes indicating a code.

OBC...

I had some fun today and programmed a code in my OBC and it disabled the start function...

Issue resolved please read! Loss/Lack of power

The issue was the hose was "ajar" going to the Mass Air Flow! Sometimes, it's the easy fixes that make up for the p.i.t.a.'s! Thanks everyone for your time spent and advice/comments.

Glad it was so simple. As you can see by my sig, I'm a firm believer in the KISS principle

My 525i is super quick...the 4.10 gear is great. Too bad they don't make a 4.30!!!
