Unhappy Need help to estimate repair costs!

Hello everyone,

It was a bad day today! I got in accident, someone hit me from the back and my bimmer did everything to save me, but I am afraid I lost my car.

Now I have a few questions and I hope someone can help me with.

Is it going to be a totaled or repairable?
If it is a total loss, what I can expect to get for my car? It is 2011 535i and have every option that was possible to add at that time. Here is the list of options: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...648&highlight=

Can I do anything to get a reasonable compensation?

Thank you in advance!

I would say it is repairable. In Oklahoma, you should look into diminished value and get compensation as your car won't be worth the same once repaired.

Need help to estimate repair costs!

Forgot to mention that it happened in Midland, Texas and I left it there. Are there any online tools to make an estimation of diminished or total loss values?

WOW, I'm glad you're ok! I have to say it looks like a loss to me and for your sake you now want it to be a loss! Is there damage to the front of the car too?

My concern is how they estimate the value of my vehicle. If I try to calculate it on KBB or somewhere else it lets me to choose just half of the options that my car has.

Friendly advice: You've had a tough, semi-traumatic day already. Don't sweat the valuation just yet. Let things settle out - and yourself to settle down - a little bit.

You might be pleasantly surprised by what your insurance adjustor tells you. If not, that will be the time to dive into these matters of valuation.

I was concerned because it is my first accident in US and I didn't know anything how things are handled here. You may be right! I better be thankful that I am alive and didn't get injured.

Similar Situation

My pictures are from 2006. At the time of the rear ending, my car was 7 months old. This was my 2nd car crash in 10 years. In both cases, I was not at fault. In my earlier crash, I handled it all myself with the insurance company. They stretched the car back into shape. I was never happy with it, but I did not know better. With the SAAB, I immediately got an attorney to handle my case. My SAAB was not as expensive as your BMW, but I had just financed 25K out of the 39K purchase price. This was a lot of money to me at the time and I did not want this car repaired. I wanted a new car. By then end of the week, I had a new car. It turned out, I was upside down financially, but Gap insurance kicked in. My lawyer worked with the insurance companies and got everything settled. I ended up with a small payout besides the car. I am in California, so the laws are probably different. But, I did not know how to advocate for myself. The lawyer did. Good luck.

Thank you for your feedback!
Do you think I need to find an attorney right now and let him deal with it or wait and see what his insurance company will be willing to pay me?

Gawd I HATE pickups!!

That really sucks! Glad you're OK!! I think the odds are good you will not need an attorney.

I've had a less expensive car similarly rear ended with similar front end damage. Even though it was a less expensive car the repair estimate for your BMW is going to be significantly higher and my opinion is that it's almost a 100% certainty the car will be totalled. If they don't want to total it then you can start thinking about an attorney.

As to the value, you are due 100% of full retail value plus taxes and fees. Look for cars similar to yours for sale at retail at dealerships on Autotrader, Cars.com, etc., and on the bmwusa.com CPO page.

Good luck.

I had an almost identical accident in my 2007 550i. Very similar rear damage (actually, your's looks worse) and front damage. State Farm totaled my car. Originally, their adjuster said there was $9,700 in damages. My repair shop, who wasn't a State Farm pre-approved vendor, said there was $30,000 in damages. I was expecting there to be a big fight given the discrepancy but, much to my surprise, State Farm notified me almost immediately that they agreed to total the car. They didn't even send their adjuster back to look at the car again. I don't know what happened and thought it was strange. I've wondered since if they just total a car when there's damage to a certain area. Given the difference in their initial estimates I expected them to fight it.

Please know that you're not obligated to take the car to a repair shop the insurance company approves. You can take it wherever you wish. I would ensure it's taken to a top rated shop who can give a thorough assessment of the damage. You'll have a much better chance of them identifying enough damage to maximize your chances of the car being totaled.

It looks like a total loss to me. I wouldn't hire a lawyer until you need one. If the car is totalled, you'll just need to find comparable cars with similar options and mileage for sale (and without any accident history) to present to the insurance company. If the insurance company isn't reasonable, then get a lawyer. Good luck and keep us posted.

If it is a 2011 535i, it should be totaled looking at the pictures. Negotiate with the insurance, never take their first offer. Pick up trucks are getting so big now a days, they have become weapons on the road and sometimes in the hands of morons.

Fault State

I am in California, and we are a fault state. So, my advice may not apply. I have heard that in no-fault states recovery is much more straight forward. For a $60K+ recovery, here in CA, I would not hesitate to get a lawyer, if I started to get any push back. As a side note, the day after my accident, the insurance company, from the person who hit me, contacted me to check on my status. I said nothing and referred them to my attorney. The point being, I was shaken up by my crash, and did not have the clarity to deal with the details.

But, I think the other responders are probably correct about your car being declared a total loss. My SAAB was front wheel drive and it was still a total loss. In your case, you have a lot of complicated engineering in a rear drive car that will cost a fortune to repair.

I am afraid I won't be able to find a car with similar options, because my car had all options that were available in 2011.

By the way, should I ask to compensate for my laptop and iPad that I had in the trunk when it happened?

Rauan: This is very important, especially since you are new to the U.S.: Have you reported this to your insurance company yet? It sounds as though you have not.

You must do so quickly. Right now. Call the company if you haven't already done so. They almost certainly have someone on duty around the clock.

The first person you contact will walk you through the process, answering all of your questions. And, yes, you should report the loss of your laptop and iPad -- during the initial phone call.

I'd agree with that guy... My 335i was 14k for side damage and another 10+ underneath and got total loss.

Your front looks like it hit some crumple zones so I'd push HARD for total loss/ DV or at least if they make you fix it and you have what I had where I had the pick of ANY shop within a radius find the best most reputable expensive shop in your area.

I wouldn't want it though. That car will not protect you again the way it did just now.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...592&highlight=

Heres my thread for point of reference, although as stated each state, policy, insurance company is 100% different.

Oh and good luck seeing your deposit if it wasn't your fault anytime soon lol... My claim was reported that night 5/11... It just entered Subrogation 12/11/2013 and I don't get my deposit back till thats done hopefully you didn't have a 2k deductible like me.

Thank you for advice! I called them right after it happened. My insurance company gave me a claim number and I guess I can go online and add my laptop and iPad as damaged items, right? One thing I forgot to do is to ask the person who hit me his insurance details, but police was there and they gave me a piece of paper complaint number.

@OP

Based on the photo, it appears to be multi-cars accidents. Assuming you are not running lights and going straight, the vehicle that rear-ended your F10 shall be liable for the damages done to your vehicle.

Does that Dodge has insurance? If so, you shall contact his insurer and file claim assuming Dodge driver is at-fault. It is totaled more than likely due to impact on the frames, I-beam & the fact that you have a 2011 F10 which has a lower market value vs. estimated repair.

Yes... I uploaded the receipts of my mods to their site for them to see. SO like my dinan stage 3 suspension, cobb order, etc.

Yeah I had a police number and all that... Never used it just provided it to the Insurance company.

It depends on which county sheriff department or PD responding to the scene. That piece of paper is called crash report or police report. Some will detail other party's insurance carrier and others will not. When you filed the claim, be sure to provide that case or report # to the insurance claim rep.
