Gun Thread

Been a lot of discussion on fire arms here lately, so I figured I would post up my small arsenal. Let's see yours.

Smith & Wesson - Bodyguard 380mm

Ruger LC9 w/ Crimson Trace Lazer

Browning Buck Mark Light .22

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm

All 3 together...

Les Baer 1911 45mm

All hand guns together...

Marlin Bolt Action Rifle .22

Smith & Wesson AR15-22

Rock River LAR15-5.56

Safety First. Everything is locked up except the ones I sleep with.

That is cool! How about an inventory list of what you have there.

I need more mag's, sucks having to keep reloading.

Man. Who would have thought that 7 series ownership was correlated to home arsenals. Definitely seems like an interesting hobby though. May have to get into this game at some point.

I have at least 10 mags per handgun, I use this speed loader by mag lula, it's awesome. I can do it by hand, but this is twice as fast! Watch the YouTube videos!

I purchased the p99 for home defense when we moved into our current home in 2005. I had shot guns at ranges many times before, but had never felt the need to own a gun before then. Our community is gated, but shortly after being built (when we moved in) there were a series of burglaries; some, where burglars defeated security systems. So, I bought my Walther. We were spared and, fortunately, those incidents seemed to have stopped shortly after. I purchased the p22 for my wife and for target practice a few months after purchasing the p99.

Just weighing in…

**Disclaimer, IMO ONLY** as I am NOT a handgun aficionado. I have just been handling handguns for 25+ years, I have attended several firearms safety classes (as a job requirement) and my wife and I are both in possession of CCW permits. I hate to emphasize that, but there are people that think only THEIR opinions count and instead of offering "other opinions" they would rather comment negatively on yours. If I say something blatantly wrong, please feel free...but if it’s just YOUR opinion...give YOUR opinion with a post reply...wheew, not that's off my chest…LOL.

Like most people here, I bought handguns for home defense... the Colt 380 (6+1) for my wife since I was traveling a lot and the XDM 9MM (19+1...added laser to it) for myself.
People have asked what to look for in a handgun, from stopping power (subjective, as there are a LOT of factors here...shot placement being one of them) to cost of shooting.

- Attend a firearms safety class. IMO (and as RICHARD109 said...and ANYONE that handles weapons responsibly would say), SAFETY FIRST!

- Then go to a range (since most have several handguns for rent) and try several handguns to see what feels right in your hands, what pulls (trigger) smoothly for you, what you can control and how quickly you can re-acquire your target after recoil (It really does you no good if you fire that .50 cal round, miss with the first round, and the recoil does not allow you to re-acquire your target to fire additional rounds).
--Just FYI, since my wife has small hands, she was thinking of getting a revolver before she felt the grip of the Colt in her hands and she realized that she could fire all rounds relatively quickly and effectively…all from trying several guns at a range.

- Stopping power… (subjective) I would go with a 380 as a minimum (I will also concede that ANY cal. can kill) and use “home defense” rounds.
-- If you are using it for home defense (probably combat within 20 feet or less) be prepared to fire ALL rounds (as I advised my wife, fearing for her life), as having rounds in your weapon if the "perp" makes it to you probably does you NO GOOD and now the weapon can be used on you. (Yes, larger caliber weapons can STOP someone with less rounds, but if you are not already proficient with the weapon (shot placement) then comes the cost of getting proficient (as SLS-BMW said in the original thread that spawned this thread...it can be expensive!)

- Cost of shooting. Simply put, for the most part, the lower the caliber the less the cost…and 40 cal. and above can cost you an “arm or leg” if you go to the range frequently to get or stay proficient. Again, that’s why I say 380 or 9MM because there is a balance of cost and stopping power associated with the rounds.

I apologize about the lengthy reply, but thanks for reading.

I can also throw in for home defense you should be buying hollow points, it'll stop the bullets from going through wall after wall (or going into the bad guy and then continuing on into a loved one, innocent civilian, etc), and when the hollow points hit the suspect, they will do more damage... For those of you who love Glock, I would always caution whoever gets one to understand the guns are fairly wide (small hands are hard to fit around a Glock) and the only real "safety" on a Glock is your finger, hence the need for a gun safety class, and to remember only point a gun at what you are willing to kill.

That said I have a .45 Kimber (love love love that gun), and a .40 Glock 27.

Masoe... I'm surprised you got CCW's for you and the wife, those are veryyyyy hard to get in Cali!

I think Cali just recently amended their concealed carry law. Pending an appeal, it should be easier to get one.

Agreed, but knowing our courts I imagine there will be some injunctions filed to stop it...

+1 on the hollow points (you can see mine in the pics)!! I have recently relocated back to Cali. My current CCW is from living in CO. I haven't applied for one here yet..but I will. You are right, they are hard to come by here. As a matter of fact, before moving back here I checked the "reciprocal state" CCW list...and Cali does NOT honor ANY...LOL!

Popoemt, do you go to a range in SF? There is one here in Fairfield that is OK, the one in Denver was awesome!
