Folding side mirrors

Hi Guys, on my 04 525i E60, I don't have side folding mirrors. Is it possible to do a DIY on it and make it work to fold and unfold when locked/unlocked? Any DIY guide and cost estimate?

Also, I read somewhere, that the side mirror will twist down when the car is put into R, is that true. Mine does not do it, maybe Australia did not have that option.

If yours has that option, you put the mirror selector switch on passenger. Only the passenger mirror will dip. As far as your other question, hou should do a search, I'm sure it has been done.

For folding mirrors, you need to have mirrors that have the folding motor and also have the vehicle option added so the car knows that it has the mirrors. This will allow you to fold the mirrors by holding down the lock button, at least this was how my car was. Then I bought a new window switch that came with the fold button and now I can fold whenever I want and the mirrors auto unfold when I hit 30 mph. Hope that helps.

Are you sure you can't fold them manually? My 2004 545i doesn't have a switch on the door but I can fold the mirrors in manually. Found that out by accident, thought I broke the mirror when I first did it!

It depends on how much they are going for used or new for a pre 9/05 car, plus coding and whether or not you want the button. I do believe that whatever mirrors you get would have to be European since no pre-lci in the states came with folding mirrors except M5s.

Thanks, anyone here know what built option is for folding mirrors and the one where the mirror tilts down on Reverse.

Is there any DIY on this or am the only one thinking about this

You mean a diy for changing the mirrors? I did one over at 5series.net. Just search for my name in the diy section.

So for the mirrors to dip/tilt down when the gear selector is put into R is a feature that can be programmed or just requires a built option to be added to the VO or needs extra hardware to be installed? My side mirrors do not tilt on the E60 2004.

I understand the folding side mirrors inwards require the motorised mirror which I don't have.

It may be just a coding thing. I haven't actually seen one without it.

I think it's a coding issue. I don't see why you would need anything extra to make it tilt down when it goes to R since you can tilt them down yourself with the door controls.

It's interesting to see the options and features that were standard that different parts of the world got.

True, just for a bit of code some countries have to pay the $tealer. Anyway, does anyone know what code or option needs to be changed/added.

Searched a bit more and my built information has the following option;
"S431A INNENSPIEGEL,AUTOMATISCH ABBLENDEND Interior mirror with automatic-dip"

Does that mean my side mirror should auto-dip? If yes, then I have tried the button position on left and right and it still does not work.

Okay, searched a bit and found the option that needs to be in the VO is $430. I added the $430 to both CAS and LMA module on my E60, but the external side mirrors still do not AUTO DIP (I tried with the side mirror switch on either side i.e. driver and passenger). What am I missing to get the external side mirrors to AUTO DIP?

Now isn't that a pity mine is 2004 . But what is strange is, that if I cam adjust my mirror in all directions, by can't the flip work. That needs extra hardware, very bizzare.

Auto-Dip is no the same function as the tilt while in reverse. BMW"s have had that tilting mirror in reverse mode FOR EVER but only on cars with memory seat option (I do not know if all e60's have memory seats, the 5ers in the past didn't always have it). The Auto-Dip feature is the electro chromatic dimmer that happens at night when bright lights hit the mirror.

Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense not to use the tilt/dip in a mixed up fashion . So based on that since I don't have memory seats, I guess it won't work.

My car is a January 2004 build and has the tilt-down mirror and the dimming mirrors as well. Might be a standard feature for 545i?
