High Gloss Black Window Trim Problem - Australia

Hi all,

I have an X3 with shadow line black window trim I believe it is called.

The car is regularly washed in automatic contact less as well as hand car washes.

After about a year one window trim has degraded badly. All other trims, roof rails and mirror surrounds are fine. Dealer has reviewed but says it is not his problem.

I have discussed with BMW Australia who advised I must have been using harsh chemicals in the automatic car wash. As a gesture of good will, they will replace the trims but I must come to an agreement with the dealer for the labour to replace them.

Does anyone else have this problem / seen this bluefish tinge on their trims?

If anyone else has had any experience with this fault, could you let me know please. It seems strange to me that after spending a decent amount on a luxury car, it would appear that a) it can't handle detergents in some car washes and b) the car washes only attack one trim.

look forward to any advice.

To be honest it sounds like a manufacturer defect to me. If there was a maintenance issue on your end then all four Window trims would be degrading, but you only described it as impacts one window.

Don't know what the cost would be but I would consider getting the trim wrapped in black instead if the dealer was going to charge an unreasonable amount in labor

I have what sounds to be a similar ("bluefish tinge") problem on my shadowline trim. I think it came from a lousy carwash's "wax." I had some luck improving the shadowline by carefully buffing WD-40 on the trim. I was told there are minimally abrasive waxes that can improve the look but I am afraid to try. Other parts of the shadowline trim show the smallest mar. It's an option I'll try to avoid next time, if possible.

I have the same problem. Only happens when I pay for the more expensive car was with the wax option (as someone else mentioned). It usually cleans up with some Blackfire Wet Diamond or similar polish product.

When I was ordering my 14X3 my CA specifically told me not to get the shadow line trim because he has seen so many customers with problems just like yours (using automatic car washes). I decided to go for the regular satin trim.

Send like BMW knows about this problem but it's not coming from their end. It's a problem with car washes.
